Studying the Russian language sets up a lot of traps for students. Some of them are hidden in the correct use of morphemes, because just one suffix can radically change the perception of a word, change its meaning, and even give offensive overtones. A vivid example of dependence on a single letter is “transient”. The concept is simple and seems to be accessible to the layman, but regularly causing difficulties in preparing for exams in working with texts.
Addition to meaning
Continuous movement lies in the root -move-, which is the focus of attention. But therein lies the main trick! All the differences between the definition of “coming” and the concept of “transient” are a modified prefix and the replacement of the familiar “and” to “e”. What happens in such a case? In morphemes semantic coloring is hidden:
- at- – approach of objects;
- pre- - turns into "very" or unfolds into a re-.
This case indicates an intersection. When a certain phenomenon or thing overtakes the speaker at a time interval, and then diverges from him. For example, in the text it may sound like “passing into another world.”
Classic interpretation
Work with different parts of speech. To accurately determine the meaning of the word "transient", you need to derive the original verb from the participle. Only at first glance it is difficult. You will quickly find the infinitive "to pass", which breaks into two senses:
- go something;
- disappear, pass.
The concept is obsolete, it indicates a literal movement across a river, a bridge, a road, etc. And as an allegory, the verb covers natural and abstract phenomena, for which time is a kind of threshold:
- P. happiness.
- P. rain, etc.
The term under study as an adjective also denotes a momentary character. Epithets become its closest synonyms:
- short-lived;
- temporary.
Why such confusion? Now “transient” is a book definition that is found in classical fiction as “withering”, “transforming”, etc. Modern authors practically do not use it, and for colloquial speech the word is too catchy, ponderous against the background of analogues.
Current usage
Are there situations in which an adjective would be appropriate? As part of a poetic work or to immerse readers in the atmosphere of the past, “transient” sounds good. This is an instant transition to high style with a claim to philosophical overtones and deep reflections on the meaning of life. However, don't overdo it!
Bphilistine conversation should be simpler. And for official documents, such linguistic delights are completely harmful, because the interlocutor may think that you are mocking him. Everything is good in moderation, including colorful definitions.
