Knowledge of foreign languages has long ceased to be a luxury. It is necessary both for the search for a prestigious job, and for the widest communication “without borders”. It is not for nothing that Russian schools have introduced compulsory study of a foreign language from the 2nd grade, and for graduates the USE in this subject will become mandatory. Our world no longer seems as vast as our grandparents saw it. People roam relatively freely around the world, blending into bizarre cocktails of multinational families or corporations.
If you don’t even think about global things, but simply get together to spend a vacation away from your homeland, then even for this it’s worth mastering at least the basics of a foreign language, best of all English, which is most common in the world. A self-respecting tourist necessarily strives to master the minimum set of common expressions, such as “hello”, “how are you?”, “good”, “thank you”, “bon appetit” in different languages. This allowslook like a well-mannered person who, even without knowing the language, strives to be polite, which, in turn, helps to win over interlocutors. And a wish for a pleasant appetite in English or in another language makes it possible to establish contact especially vividly. After all, it is at the table, enjoying not only communication, but also delicious food, that makes it easier for people to find a “common language” and mutual understanding.
It is curious that it is simply impossible to accurately reproduce our phrase "bon appetit" in English. Somehow it is not very accepted at the English table to wish this to each other. Maybe a he althy human desire to eat is too physiological for the prudish islanders? They wish you a pleasant appetite in English with the phrase "enjoy your meal" (literally - enjoy your food), but it is also more typical for the American version of the language. The British had to borrow the expression from their French overseas neighbors, well-known life-lovers. And now, to wish you a bon appetit in English, you need to say in French - “bon appétit” (in the name of justice, it should be noted that we also “licked” our word “appetite” from the French).
Other peoples of the world are not so delicate and cold, and they all wish each other good appetite with pleasure. Using the French "bon appétit" can replace this wish in almost all languages, at least your good intentions before the start of the meal will definitely be correctly interpreted.
"Bon appetit - and not chewed flies" - readsRussian proverb. Indeed, the wish for a pleasant appetite is not a mere formality, it is a kind of ritual preparation of the body for eating, and a good atmosphere is very important so that everything eaten goes for good (perhaps these are the last echoes of the habit of our ancestors to say prayers before eating). The phrase "bon appetit", in English it is said, in French or in Russian, in any case will set people up for positive and will return to you the goodwill of others.
In conclusion, I would like to say that trying to make a good impression and establish good relations should not only be in the society of foreigners. Do not forget to use the "magic words" when meeting new people, and in the circle of your family and friends.
