So, the work begins with a story about an old Cossack and his sons, who had just returned from the bursa. Embracing his sons and letting them rest from the road, Taras is going to the Sich. In his opinion, only there they can become real men. Upon arrival at the Cossack freemen, the brothers actively join her life. Ostap and Andriy, which is the name of the sons of Taras, showed themselves to be brave warriors who can't wait to go into battle.

This indicates that he respected his father very much and loved him, no matter what. Andriy understood that his act should have turned out that way, but he boldly made his choice.
Ostap remained true to his father's ideals and the ideals of the Zaporozhian Sich. He also met his death without fear and screams, hoping that his father would be proud of him. And Taras was really proud of him, and his heart bled. After the death of his sons, he became more bitter, more severe.
