History of ONMU
Like most higher educational institutions of a technical profile, ONMU was opened under the Soviet regime, in 1930. Then it had the status of an engineering institute and was officially called the Odessa Institute of Water Transport Engineers, an abbreviated version - OIIVT. After the war, the educational institution also underwent some changes in the structure and received the name "Odessa Institute of Marine Engineers".
ONMU received its modern look only in 2002, when it was officially given the status of a national university. Until that time, the structure and traditions of the university have already developed, which are preserved to this day.
Infrastructure of the university
Odessa National Maritime University (ONMU)consists of three educational buildings, which house the entire scientific and educational infrastructure of a higher educational institution. Computer, assembly and sports halls, workshops for students of technical speci alties, a large library and several research laboratories, not to mention the publishing house at the university with its own printing house - not every Ukrainian university can boast of such a set. The area of all buildings and buildings of ONMU is over 50 thousand square meters. We should also mention the yacht club, which today has 13 cruising yachts.

Faculties of Odessa National Maritime University
What should be said about the level of education in such an institution as the Odessa National Maritime University? Feedback on the level of teaching is quite positive. Over 5,000 students are currently studying in such speci alties as shipbuilding, ship mechanics, port mechanization, water transport and offshore structures, transport technologies and systems, economics and management, and law. In addition, the university constantlythere is a center for pre-university training, where schoolchildren have the opportunity to take special courses aimed at preparing them for future studies (including UPE points for these courses), and a faculty for advanced training and postgraduate education - especially for school teachers and teachers.
Specializations for students
The main direction of education at ONMU is, of course, speci alties, one way or another related to the infrastructure of river and sea transport. At the same time, the student has a very wide choice - from purely technical specializations in the study of ship power plants, hydraulic engineering to the legal aspects and economic logistics of water transport. On the other hand, the expansion of the infrastructure of the university allows such specializations as criminal law, economic and mathematical modeling and social philosophy to function. Most speci alties are also available for postgraduate study and doctoral studies. Every year scientific papers are defended here, and scientific research is actively developed. Two commissions for the defense of doctoral works have been created and are actively working, primarily for five scientific branches, the main ones for the university.
Teaching staff
If we talk about the teaching staff, it does not seem very large at first glance. So, there are only 418 teachers in the ONMU staff, but 59 of them are recognized doctors of sciences, and more than half are candidates. Considering the small sizeuniversity, then this percentage seems quite impressive. 35 members of the academies of sciences of Ukraine in various fields, two state laureates of all-Ukrainian awards in the field of science and technology work on a permanent basis in ONMU.

The printing house at the university also operates, publishing collections of scientific articles, special periodicals and scientific monographs from university teachers.

Separately, it should be noted the national university "Odessa Maritime Academy", which is very popular with students and in some way even competes with ONMU. But at the same time, the main direction of NU "OMA" is navigation. Training seafarers whose level will meet international standards and attract foreign shipowners is the main task of this university.
The buildings of the National University "Odessa Maritime Academy" have all the necessary set of material and technical base, modern simulators for future sailors, a huge library on the necessary profiles. Since the profession of a sailor is not only knowledge of theory, but also practical skills, NU "OMA" pays special attention to sports andphysical development of cadets. Olympic-class swimming pools, gyms and sports clubs are all available and actively used by university students.
National University "Odessa Maritime Academy" as a unique educational institution in Ukraine over the years of independence has significantly expanded its infrastructure, including the opening of branches in Mariupol and Izmail.
Danube University Institute
Separately, we should consider the branch of NU "OMA" in the city of Izmail. It was named the Danube Institute of the National University "Odessa Maritime Academy". Unlike the central department of the academy, there are no postgraduate and doctoral studies in the branches, here you can only complete a bachelor's degree. For further training in the speci alty, you will have to go to Odessa, where you will be provided with a hostel without any problems. In Izmail, as well as in Mariupol, there are also hostels for cadets of local branches of the Odessa Maritime Academy. The branch in Izmail was opened in 2002 and during this time many first-class specialists have graduated. Education at the Danube Institute of the "Odessa Maritime Academy" is conducted in the main speci alty "271 River and Sea Transport", the recruitment is both state and contract. The cost of training on the contract will be 15380 UAH. (33,292 rubles) for full-time students and 7645 UAH. (16,548 rubles) for part-time students.
