“Where are you, my dark-eyed, where? In Vologda, where-where-where, in Vologda-where, in a house where there is a carved palisade”… The song about Vologda is familiar to all Soviet people, but not everyone knows that this city is connected with music much more closely than just a song- hit. There is an excellent music college in Vologda, from whose walls people come out … However, who exactly comes out - as well as more about the aforementioned institution itself - we will learn from the material below.

How it all began

The history of the music college in Vologda is rooted in the beginning of the twentieth century. Exactly one hundred years ago, in 1919, the Folk Music School was opened at the Vologda Proletarian University. It was created by five young people, musicians (a violinist-composer, a cellist, a pianist, a piano teacher and a soloist-vocalist), who came from two metropolitan regions - St. Petersburg and Moscow. Having received an appropriate education there and having goteventually to Vologda, they decided to organize their own music school there. No sooner said than done: in February, a small announcement about the opening appeared in the Krasny Sever newspaper, and since April, the Folk Music School has opened its doors to everyone.

And there were many who wanted to, and a successful start resulted in further successful work. The indicators of the new music school were high, and only two years later it was reorganized into the State Music School of the second stage (that is, designed for teenagers). However, it still seemed insufficient to work only with children, and therefore, after a couple of years, the Folk Music School turned into a musical technical school with a children's music school of the first stage attached to it.

It was a real breakthrough! After all, what is Vologda in those years? An ordinary "out of the ordinary" provincial town, without an abundance of concert halls, philharmonic halls, conservatories and everything that would not surprise a resident of the capital. The newly formed musical college in Vologda became not only an educational institution (from which, by the way, many musicians and performers who later became famous came out), but also a kind of concert venue that introduced the townspeople to music - its various types. Soloists and choirs, classical music and jazz - that just did not sound from the stage of the technical school, the leadership of which, not being completely satisfied with the presence of only its own institution in Vologda, achieved the opening of a working philharmonic society there as well. In general, with the advent of the musical college in Vologda, a realmusical revolution.

Later life in the twentieth century

In the thirties, the Vologda Music College was turned into a regional educational institution; almost immediately it was renamed again - it became known as the regional music school. During the war years, most of the male employees and many students went to the front, and after those terrible years, the life of the music school began to slowly return to its usual peaceful course.

Since the sixties, new areas of training began to open, including the theoretical department (before the educational institution trained only practitioners). At the end of the sixties, the school received a new building for use, where it successfully moved, and almost at the very end of the last century it acquired its own hostel - however, in an extremely sad dilapidated state. We managed to make repairs in the building on our own, and today the hostel of the Vologda Music College is open for its temporary residents.

Choral conducting is also one of the first speci alties of the Folk Music School, but acting was opened at the college only seven years ago, this is the “youngest” direction of training. As mentioned above, the theoretical department as a separate, independent direction has been functioning since the sixties, however, disciplines related to this speci alty have been taught at the college before - from the very moment it was opened in 1919. Sound engineers in the institution are trained for one year more than actors, and pop artists (both songwriters and instrumentalists) have been trained for twelve years now. As for choralists, this department separated from choral conducting at the end of the seventies of the last century, as there was a need to develop and preserve folk singing traditions.
