Looking into classical literary works, a contemporary sees a variety of unique and in its own way exquisite words, but cannot use them in the 21st century, because they do not fully understand the meaning invested by the author and are poorly aware of the relevant context. Do you want to surprise your loved one or write a sophisticated poem, screwing the concept of “flair” into it? This is a great excuse to dig into dictionaries and go through a couple of history books.
Confused etymology
The reference to the French la fleur, which translates into Russian as "flower", will seem obvious to the layman. But alas! Philologists have traced a more interesting etymology for the term. According to experts, "fleur" is a derivative of the German Flor, which appeared as a form of the Dutch floers, and then to the Old French velous. The end of a long search is the Latin word villosus, which has two meanings:
- "fuzzy";
- "hairy".
Is it not about the overgrown back of a particularly courageous knight? Not at all!
Fashion Secret
The seamstress who loves his profession can give the right answer. After all, it is from her hands that an amazing, thinnest canvas comes into the world that can decorate the happy moments of life or protect the owner from other people's views:
- exquisite, transparent fabric, most often made of silk;
- products from it.
Meaning is a bit outdated because the fashion has changed too. In some cases, it means mourning black cloth for hanging the portrait of the deceased or for use in funeral robes. But is this a romantic flair that poets sing about? Lyricists have an allegorical meaning:
- veil or haze, a translucent curtain covering something from view;
- veil of mystery.
And here the concept can be extended to a variety of objects and phenomena. For some, we are talking about fog or shadows in a dense forest, others will say with confidence that compliments and flirting are a veil that hides the true thoughts and intentions of the interlocutor. It is not necessary to rely on sight.
The word easily approaches the word "loop" when describing the fragrance of a perfume that has survived after the departure of a beloved, or turns into a synonym for the word "atmosphere" when you need to point out the dominant emotion, which makes it difficult to concentrate on constructive things and think sober.
Daily communication
How appropriate would "fleur" be? It depends on the situation for which you decide to save the colorful definition. It sounds elegant, demonstrates the sublimity of the speaker, helps to tune in to romance. In a secular society or during the courtship of a person you like, a word will be most useful.
