Truth is hard, almost always. But there are people in the world who are born with a heightened sense of justice. For them, telling the truth and breathing are synonymous. The only problem is that everyone has their own truth. Let's talk today about who a convict is. This is our subject of study today.
Etymology: face, face, face
It's good to be able to touch the roots. Thanks to dictionaries, because they give us such an opportunity.
The verb "to expose" the genealogy comes from Old Church Slavonic. The verb owes its existence, on the one hand, to the prefix, and on the other hand, to the word “lichati”. As it is easy to understand, the most important noun here is “lik”. And the verb itself means "to show the true face." How can one not remember the word "mask", that is, "mask". When a person incriminates, he takes off the mask, showing others the true face of the object.
The person who accuses is the one who tells the truth, reveals the true state of things. Language tied to its rootsstronger than some people, so we have completely preserved this meaning. But when we move from the etymological dictionary to the explanatory one, many will be surprised.
Meaning
After attention has been paid to the origin, it is easy to establish the true meaning of the participle, although one must again turn to the verb. The explanatory dictionary gives a choice to all those interested in two meanings of the verb "reveal":
- Expose, reveal the unseemly, vile, vile, severely condemn. Example: “She hated vices and severely denounced them; no one was saved from her righteous judgment. She didn't even make exceptions for her relatives, which is probably why she was alone all the time.”
- Discover, show, reveal. “Playing the clarinet, she exposed her talent to the fullest, if she does not quit, then she will become an excellent musician.”
It must be said that only the first meaning of the word has been retained in linguistic practice, and the second one is very rare at the moment. But we digress, however, it cannot be said that the analysis of the verb does not concern the case. Yes, our main subject is the accusative, but the participle is directly related to the verb.
Synonyms
To consolidate the result, one must turn to words and phrases that could take the place of the concept under consideration. Without delay, we provide a list:
- leading out (to clean water);
- detecting;
- lifting (veil of secrecy);
- revealing;
- revealing;
- tearing off (mask, disguise).
Of course, the synonyms are a bit awkward. But for the sacrament it is necessary to select appropriate replacements. We think the reader will not have difficulty understanding. Convicting means revealing, as a rule, shameful secrets. And this role is not always so noble. In nature, there are also "pocket accusers", those who seek the truth by order, and sometimes, also by order, do not see lies.
You can't stand the truth
This quote is from the famous film A Few Good Men (1992). It quite accurately reflects all the dangers and pitfalls of the path that the accuser has chosen - this is a person who puts the truth above security.
Of course, sometimes seekers of justice act as pet dogs of the powerful. For example, servants of the authorities, who are happy to reveal the secrets of those who work with them side by side. In slang, such people are called "snitches".
For illustration, one could choose any film or book, in the center of which is a charming truth fighter. It seems that a young Tom Cruise as Lieutenant Daniel Caffey fits this image quite well. It is necessary to recall the plot at least a little in order to understand the seriousness of the game.
The film is about a murder that took place at a military base in Guantanamo Bay. Two soldiers are accused. The division's lawyers decided that they had applied a "red code" to the deceased - a hazing system of punishment. Daniel Caffey is an aspiring lawyer who doesn't like going to court. Compromise is the keytool. And just such a person is chosen to protect the interests of the soldiers. At first, he acts according to a well-established scheme: he offers a compromise that is possible in this situation. But then a denunciatory subject wakes up in him (this word means it is known that). He wants a full justification for his charges. Fans of the genre know how things ended, and the rest of us recommend watching the movie.
It takes courage to rebuke
Invented stories and real ones prove that the life of a person who seeks the truth is difficult. There is little justice in the world, or rather, it is relative. The criteria of fairness depend on the financial condition and social status. A person with money almost always finds things right. Those who are not so lucky in life are acutely aware of the disadvantages of this or that social structure.
This is partly why the TV series Colombo is so popular. The strange but charming lieutenant is not rich, gives the impression of a simpleton, but at the same time he repays we althy people who have lost their conscience. Not all viewers feel the class moment, but it is quite clearly spelled out. But it's one thing when a detective can show by his example what "convicting" means, and another when an ordinary citizen starts a war against the powers that be. And to be honest, in real life, an investigator like Colombo would have been removed from the path long ago, not paying attention to any means. The reader will surely understand what it is about.
A couple of words in defense of lies
When talking about lawyers or policemen, it is clear why they should be honest and incorruptible, although this does not always happen even in films. Consider, for example, the movie The Devil's Advocate (1997). Keanu Reeves' character would even defend Freddy Krueger if he was well paid. However, we digress.
But truth-seeking doesn't work for some people. I'm talking about parents, of course. There are some representatives of this "workshop" who prefer not to keep children in the dark about their shortcomings. Such a policy only hurts the offspring, especially if they have not reached that level of maturity when the realization comes that all the claims of people are, first of all, claims against themselves. The parents did not survive something, they failed, and now God, as they believe, gave them a second chance, the hope of correcting the situation. Therefore, they decide to play for the child the role of a judge accusing (the meaning of the word no longer needs to be commented), honest and incorruptible. The defendant (child) is a victim of exorbitant vanity, one can only feel sorry for him. This leads to a very important conclusion: sometimes a lie is better, especially if a person knows for sure that the truth hurts.
That's probably all. It is not as difficult to answer the question of what the word “convicting” means as to decide later whether it is necessary to take on the role of a judge in a given situation. Here everyone decides for himself.
