Today, higher educational institutions are subject to quite high requirements, because this is the environment in which future highly qualified specialists are trained. A high-quality educational process, modern technologies, practical orientation are the necessary indicators of the work of any university. How did it all start?
The decision to open a higher educational institution in Baku was made almost a hundred years ago, in 1919. The famous surgeon, Professor V. I. Razumovsky became the first rector of the university. Four faculties became the base: legal, medical, physical and mathematical and historical and philological. In 1922, the university was renamed the Azerbaijan State University.
In 1930, during the reorganization, the university was disbanded, on its basis a number of independent institutions were created (Higher Pedagogical, Medical, National Economy, etc.). However, a few years later it was restored to its previous status.
After the Great Patriotic War, the university, as a republican center of science and education, took a significant part in the creation of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.
University today
Currently Baku State University is the largest multifunctional educational cluster. It consists of 17 faculties (124 leading departments), 3 research centers, 24 research laboratories involved in the study of a wide range of problems. The university has two research institutes (physics and applied mathematics), which are supported by 200 employees.
The number of students is more than 22 thousand people. The university implements educational programs for undergraduate, graduate, doctoral studies, there are several dissertation councils that allow you to get a degree.
Maharramov Abel Mammadali oglu has been the rector of Baku State University for the past twenty years (until November 2018).

Leadership and teaching staff

The main task of the faculties of Baku State University is professional training in priority areas of development of the economy, production, and social disciplines. Among the speci alties: journalism, theology, psychology, oriental studies, international relations, geology, chemistry, biology, ecology, physics, applied mathematics and cybernetics and many others. Much attention is paid to the principles of organizing the educational process: modern technologies, democracy, fundamentality.
In the framework of scientific activities, preference is given to integration and cooperation with major national researchcenters and business structures.
Environment and features
Modern educational process is impossible without advising technological and material base. Therefore, the leadership of Baku State University pays great attention to its continuous modernization. At the disposal of students and teachers are specially equipped classrooms, educational laboratories, computer rooms, ligaphone rooms.
A printing house and a publishing house (more than 20 magazines) that meet modern European standards operate on the basis of the university. The library is constantly operating (5 subscription and 14 reading rooms), the fund of which has more than 2.5 million items.
Two training centers were organized for students to practice and rest in the villages of Quba and Khizi regions.
Bachelor's, Master's, Postgraduate
Back in 1997, the university switched to a three-stage system of education. In addition to undergraduate and graduate programs, there is a doctoral program that allows you to continue training in the field of science.
The university implements bachelor's programs in 63 speci alties, master's programs in 210. The term of study at the first stage is 4 years, which end with a state exam and defense of the final work. The next stage is a two-year study and preparation of a master's thesis.
Azerbaijani and Russian languages are used in the educational process. Since 2011, in order to integrate into the systemEuropean education and increasing the academic mobility of students for a number of speci alties, the main language of instruction is English. There are also a number of faculties of the Baku State University with the Russian language.
A 100-point credit system for assessing students' educational achievements is gradually being introduced.
Postgraduate training of scientific personnel in doctoral studies takes place in two stages. First: a three-year (or 4-year, part-time) study, culminating in the award of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. It will take another 4-5 years of dissertation studies to obtain a PhD degree.
International cooperation
Baku State University has a long-term system of well-established interaction with foreign educational and scientific organizations.
In 2008, it was decided to participate in international university rankings. The integration of the university into the Bologna educational system has become a priority.
In recent years, links have been established with hundreds of universities around the world (Russia, USA, Belarus, Georgia, Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Yemen and many others).
