Words are formed in the most unexpected way, when a person needs a capacious term to denote something new. Some come as borrowings from foreign languages, others acquire additional meanings within the jargon. Against their background, “pushing” is an amazing phenomenon that breaks down into two independent definitions. How did this happen? Research in traditional dictionaries and on virtual battlefields will prompt.
What did they do in Russia?
If the accent falls on the letter "i", we are talking about the original Russian concept. Vasmer traced the etymology to "fluff", after which he suggested the original interpretation:
- breath;
- breath.
It meant something gentle, light, airy. Able to sway even with minimal wind. The basic version breaks down into two readings:
- comb or fluff something so that it fluffs up;
- dissolve, uplift - about feathers, wool, hair.
Examples will tell life. In the first case, mom or brother can ruffle the hair, giving it a resemblance to a cloud. In the second, a visual demonstrationa cat will become: the meaning of "push" is applicable to the hairs standing on end on the back and tail. The animal visually becomes larger and scares away predators.
In a colloquial format, the word under study is used allegorically, as a synonym for "scold, pronounce". There is also a specialized term for the treatment of the skin, in which the inside is cleaned, becoming hairy.
What do foreigners say?
If the stress is "y" in the first syllable, then the reader has a full-fledged borrowing. English to push means "press, push." Used in informal communication, invariably indicating an aggressive position:
- to insist on one's own;
- to press on a person;
- force action and stuff.
The gaming industry has its own interpretation. Poker fans usually mean the maximum bet when the gambler is sure to win with all his chips. Something similar can be seen in computer clubs. When a player decides to push during a match, it means moving to continuous attacks, trying to take key objects. Constant pressure on the lane or powerful episodic jerks can turn the game around and bring victory.
How to read correctly?
You can determine the variant of the word used by the interlocutor by stress, as well as from the context. Are we talking about fluffy things and fur harvesting? Then the literary verb, quiteappropriate in secular conversation and not causing rejection among others. Anglicism is more often designed for young people and teenagers, it replaces the classic “press”, it is found in game discussions. A wonderful addition to the lexicon.
