Standards for paper settings

The main international paper format is called ISO 216. This standard is based on the metric system, that is, a sheet of paper with an area of 1 m² is taken as the basis. This regulation is valid in almost all countries except the USA, Japan and Canada. These countries use the Letter format, which, by the way, is used in Mexico and the Philippines.

According to ISO standards, paper is classified in the following three ways:

  • "A" - documents;
  • "B" - printing products;
  • "C" - envelopes.

To find out which format is used for your printer or copier, please refer totechnical passport of the device. If the document specifies the A4 size, respectively, the printer will only work with bond paper. If the printer works with several formats, then it is better to check with the manufacturer how to configure the device for them.

In addition, to select the paper, you need to take into account the parameters:

  • density - the optimal indicator is 80-90 grams/m2;
  • opacity - the criterion is most relevant for double-sided printing;
  • moisture level - the most acceptable amount is about 4.5%;
  • electrification - high levels cause sticking, paper jams and printer malfunctions;
  • smoothness - affects the printed image;
  • cutting quality - smooth paper edges.

Type A document paper is widely used in paperwork, education and printing. Paper size A0 is the base meter squared, when divided by half, a new size is obtained - A1 and beyond.

Despite having an area of 1 m², A0 sheet is not square and has a value of 8411189 millimeters (mm). This is the so-called Whatman sheet, or drawing paper for drawings. The A1 format is 594x841 mm, which is equal to half of the A0 sheet, minus 1 millimeter. The above A0 and A1 sizes are mainly used for posters, drawings and large posters.

A2 sheet is the format of ordinary newspapers, the volume of which is 420594 mm. Upon further division,A3 paper is formed in the size of 297 by 420 mm, which is exactly 50% of A2 paper. The format is usually used for magazines or small tabloid newspapers. A3 or A3+ (extended version) can be used in basic office printers or copiers.

Formats from A4 to A6

Half of the type of paper size (210x297 mm) A3, respectively, is A4. This type of writing paper is the most common. It is used literally for everything: documents (contracts, licenses, TIN, certificates, certificates), letters, reports, catalogs, promotional materials, academic papers, magazines and much more. A4 is the basic consumable for most printers and copiers.

A5 sheet has a size of 148x210 mm. Commonly produced in this format are short-circulation and bound brochures, greeting cards, flyers, notepads, and notebooks.

A6 paper (105x148 mm) will come out if A4 is divided into four parts or folded twice. A handy leaflet or flyer comes out that can be put in a bag or purse. You can also make a bookmark out of it, for example.

Paper for business cards

The generally accepted business card format is a 90x50 mm card. Of course, a business ordering business cards can request the original size of business cards. However, printing houses spend more time for their production - it is necessary to change the settings of the cutter, prepare a non-standard set separately, which is not very convenient andexpensive.

Another question is if a card of the European format is made in Russia - 85x55 mm. Such business cards are suitable for specialists and persons who often travel on business trips or cooperate mainly with European companies. In addition, in Russian symposiums and international exhibitions, business cards of the euro format are often required. Given the greater consumption of designer paper, the cost of such cards increases accordingly, which is still justified and more profitable in economic terms.

Given Russian basic business card holders of 9x5 cm, it would be more rational and cheaper to order cards in a standard format. Larger paper cannot be placed in a business card slot, so the card will be placed on a table or in a pocket, where it can get lost among other things. With smaller sizes, the business card will simply fall out of the business card holder or another of the profile accessories designed to accommodate such cards.
