Despite changes in programs and the introduction of new standards, the classical university diploma continues to be synonymous with quality education. Especially when it comes to the oldest Russian university, which recently celebrated its 290th anniversary. The Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University is a fundamental natural science education that allows you to further realize yourself in the professional field.
From the history of the institute
1929 is considered the official date of foundation of the Faculty of Chemistry of the State University of Leningrad. Its predecessor was the Department of Chemistry, organized at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in 1916.
The first years for the faculty were quite turbulent: in connection with the reorganization a year later, in 1930, the faculty was closed, and its base was transferred to the Institute of Chemical Technology. However, two years later he was not onlyrestored, but also included a research institute.
In the post-war years, the department of radiochemistry was founded at the faculty, which trained specialists to participate in programs on nuclear energy and the development of nuclear weapons. In 1967, the first department of quantum chemistry in the Union appeared here.
Several years ago, the faculty acquired the status of the Institute of Chemistry at St. Petersburg State University.
Visiting card of the institute
The credo of the institute today is a combination of classical university and practice-oriented education, the formation of fundamental and applied knowledge among students. The basis of the educational process is an interdisciplinary approach (chemistry, physics, mechanics, biology, medicine).
The Institute implements programs of all major levels of higher and postgraduate education. There are also additional and elective programs.
Research work has been and remains the key direction. In addition to the basic departments, there are scientific laboratories and thematic research groups. Since 2010, a system of internal grants has been in place for research and internships.
As a legal entity, the educational organization was registered in 2003 (TIN of the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University - 7801002274). Today the main building of the institute is located in Peterhof.
Official address of the Institute of Chemistry, St. Petersburg State University: University Avenue, 26.
Chairs
Currently there are 14 maindepartments carrying out both educational and research activities.
Key areas of department work:
- inorganic and general chemistry;
- analytical chemistry;
- chemistry of quantum processes and solids;
- colloidal chemistry;
- organic chemistry;
- radiochemistry;
- laser materials science;
- macromolecular compounds;
- chemistry of natural phenomena;
- kinetics and chemical thermodynamics;
- electrochemistry;
- chemistry of natural compounds and solids.
The Department of Organic Chemistry of the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University is one of the oldest. It was created in 1869, it was here that A. M. Butlerov once worked.
Bachelor's degree
The Institute implements two programs at the undergraduate level: "Chemistry", "Chemistry, Mechanics of Materials and Physics" (interdisciplinary).
For admission, you must submit the results of the exam in mathematics, Russian language and chemistry. The average passing score at the Institute of Chemistry, St. Petersburg State University is 195.
Education is organized within three thematic blocks: basic (chemistry and materials science), non-chemical natural science, humanitarian general education. The first takes up to 45% of the teaching load. It includes the study of analytical, inorganic, physical, colloidal, quantum chemistry, electrochemistry, radiochemistry, etc. Students can also choose one of the study profiles (basic, physical-chemical, organic, analytical, inorganic) andspecial workshops for senior students.
Masters
The Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University has opened enrollment for master's programs "Physics, Chemistry, Mechanics of Materials", "Chemistry", "Applied and Fundamental Aspects of Nanotechnologies and Materials". The term of study is 2 years.
As part of the preparation, students study special profile and psychological and pedagogical disciplines, a foreign language, undergo pedagogical practice and work on a master's thesis. The last direction takes up to 65% of study time and is based on the results of research and experimental work. Therefore, upon admission, an individual lesson plan is formed for each student.
The Institute actively cooperates with the institutions of the Academy of Sciences, as well as foreign partners, which allows undergraduates to train in Finland, Spain, Germany, the USA.
Postgraduate studies
Choosing a scientific path, you can continue your postgraduate studies at the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University in the field of "Chemical Sciences". Duration - 4 years. Training is provided on a budgetary and contractual basis. Enrollment is based on the results of the competition. Among the entrance examinations are exams in chemistry and a foreign language.
Postgraduate students are eligible for exemption from military service for the duration of their studies and participation in the competition for nominal scholarships.
In the process of studying, you must pass a number of candidate exams:
- analytical chemistry;
- electrochemistry;
- macromolecular compounds;
- physical chemistry;
- inorganic and organic chemistry;
- radiochemistry;
- colloidal chemistry;
- chemistry of solids.
Science Laboratories
In addition to the basic departments, the institute has three scientific laboratories: biomedical chemistry (interdepartmental), chemical pharmacology and cluster catalysis.
The first of these laboratories is divided into three groups (biotechnology, medicine, biological analysis). The main activity is the research and practical application of polymeric materials based on the principles of biorecognition.
The Chempharmacology Laboratory is responsible for the development of medicinal chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry, St. Petersburg State University. Laboratory staff is also involved in the design of biologically active substances.
The cluster analysis laboratory conducts research in the field of nanochemistry, catalysis, macromolecular compounds and organic chemistry. Part of the work is carried out jointly with Moscow State University and the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Academic and extracurricular activities
Studying at the Institute is called busy. This applies to the educational process, and to other areas of student life.
In addition to the main classes, each student chooses elective courses for himself to deepen his knowledge. Courses take into account professional and regional specifics, scientific interests of teachers and students, market demandslabor.
A number of reviews about the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University are devoted to the organization of internships. This direction is given special attention. Students can take a summer internship in the strategic product management department of a paper and pulp mill in Svetogorsk (paid) or try their hand at civil service (the Open Smolny internship).
As part of extracurricular activities, a whole range of events are organized for students: festivals of creativity, competitions for innovative developments, student balls, master classes, forums and meetings with interesting people.
Student organizations
A number of public organizations help students of the Institute of Chemistry of St. Petersburg State University to develop their abilities and find like-minded people. In addition to the traditional trade union, students can become members of the student council, the scientific society, the council of young scientists, the editorial office of the newspaper "Khimperator" or the local branch of the Chemical Society named after D. I. Mendeleev.
The tasks of the SSS (scientific society) include acquaintance of 1-2 year students with the areas of work of institute departments, familiarization with research practice. Regular meetings and presentations are held with staff and graduate students of the departments. Society members take part in the organization of the Chemistry Olympiad and the All-Russian Student Conference on Chemistry.
The activities of the Chemical Society are aimed at developing networking between young chemists, supporting academic mobility,activation of joint developments. The society holds competitions, olympiads, conferences, Mendeleev readings.
The Student Council takes care of improving the conditions of the educational process, supports students' projects. Among his daily tasks: monitoring the quality of food, lobbying for increased scholarships, the formation of a student standard for the quality of education.
In general, the reviews say that the institute really holds a high educational bar.
