KhNU them. Karazin is one of the earliest classical universities in Eastern Europe. Founded back in 1804, this educational institution is much older than other universities in Ukraine. On the territory of the former Soviet Union, it is only surpassed by similar institutions in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Lvov. Of course, we are talking about full-fledged classical higher education institutions here - most collegiums, academies or pedagogical institutes received the status of universities only at the end of the twentieth century and cannot fully claim it. Kharkiv University is the pride of Ukraine

V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University has a very rich history. This is evidenced by the time of its foundation, and the fact that since 1805 it has functioned non-stop, except for the ill-fated Soviet reforms on"proletarianization" of higher education before the Great Patriotic War. A difficult and extremely interesting path from one of the first higher imperial educational institutions to a university traditionally included in the top ten best universities in independent Ukraine - this is how you can describe the history of KhNU. Karazin in a few words.

Kharkov University: history and destiny

The history of the foundation of the university is also interesting. V. N. Karazin, a man of many talents - a writer, biologist, educator, hardly considered the creation of a university in a deep province of the Russian Empire to be the main work of his life. Nevertheless, his name will go down in the annals of history for a long time precisely because of the adventure that was crowned with success and led to the creation of a classical imperial university in the province of the Russian Empire. All that was required from Karazin was a letter from Alexander I and money from local sponsors, and sometimes through deceit, and sometimes through truthful assurances, he really was able to implement such an unusual and bright idea. For a provincial, small town, although the center of Slobozhanshchina, German-speaking professors from leading universities in Europe were clearly a curiosity. Lectures were given in Latin and German, but this did not become an obstacle for students, who paid tribute to this center of science, starting from its discovery in 1805. After that, there were repressions in the thirties of the twentieth century, and a new formation as a state university, and its transformation into today's KhNU. Karazin. This university is one ofFew can be proud that all of its traditions have been preserved to the present day.

Universities of Kharkiv and KhNU

Kharkov University was at the origins of almost all major and significant educational institutions in the region. National Law Academy. Yaroslav the Wise, Kharkov University of Economics. S. Kuznets, Kharkiv Pedagogical University. G. Skovoroda gave rise, oddly enough, to KhNU. In fact, all the universities of the city were once faculties and departments of Karazinka. Over time, after many reforms in education, either the medical wing or the legal wing separated from it. In the process of transforming higher education in the thirties, the so-called "proletarianization" of education, almost every faculty began to create a separate institution, the result of which we see today.

Great university graduates

It is impossible to imagine Kharkov without KhNU. The university fit tightly into the image of the city two hundred years ago, but now the central and northern buildings of the university adorn the largest square in Europe next to another landmark of the city, Gosprom. Metro stations, streets and avenues are named after graduates.
