The original is not only an eccentric person who catches the eye of passers-by. This wonderful word has other meanings. Which? We will analyze today, as well as synonyms and examples.
Noun meaning
The dictionary gives us only two positions:
- Same as original. For example, there is the famous painting by Vincent van Gogh "Sunflowers". The reader is lucky to see a copy here (see photo), while the original is in the National Gallery in London.
- About a person who stands out from the crowd. For example, someone who this May lives exclusively according to the calendar, and not according to the weather, and wears shorts. Yes, if someone decides to dress lighter in such weather, then he can safely be awarded the title of “original”. This is not discussed.
Of course, the original can be not only a picture, but also a manuscript. For example, at a time when computerization did not gain such frantic momentum as it is now, the labor of typists was in great demand. Believe it or not, but some writers still do not part with their first typewriters, although the laptop is more convenient in this sense, but the typewriter makeschoose words more carefully, because you can’t just erase them with the backspace button. Okay, we're digressing again.
Before moving on to synonyms, I would also like to share with the reader the meaning of the adjective "original", because often in colloquial speech the place of a noun is taken by an adjective. But we are not far from the topic of books. The original is what concerns the printed matter directly.
Lost in translation and more
The strength of an adjective before a noun is that the former has more meanings. To make the conversation substantive, consider the content of the concept of "original":
- What is not borrowed, not translated, is authentic. Example: "Original, non-adapted text in English."
- Independently, free from imitating anyone. “Socrates is an original thinker whose influence continues to this day.”
- Unusual, peculiar. "This lady has an original dress, apparently, complexes - the concept is not close to her."
The reader may wonder or indignantly ask: “But how do nouns and adjectives relate to each other?!” Instead of answering, imagine the following dialogue:
- Hello, how are you?
- Yes, I want to read Vonnegut…
- What exactly?
- "Cat's Cradle".
- Original?
- Are you laughing? Vonnegut's language is too complex. I should start with children's stories and Peter Pan
- Well look.
It is easy to see that heremeaning, a detailed formula is more suitable, for example: “Do you want to read the original, not translated text?”, But for colloquial speech such a turn is too long and cumbersome, so people say “original” (this is a noun), but think of an adjective, faith, in in consciousness, they simply merge.
Synonyms for noun
After all the meanings of the object of study have been revealed, you can move on to words-substitutions. Consider them:
- crank;
- crazy;
- eccentric;
- exhibit;
- manuscript;
- picture;
- book;
- original.
Let the reader not be angry with us for taking specific objects as synonyms. Such a choice of words is necessary to show what kind of objects can be hidden behind the term "original". "Original" as a concept absorbs and accepts everything that is in the list between it and the definition of "eccentric". This is the noun "original". A synonym for it is selected depending on the language situation.
Kant and King
Of course, as an example of an original person, one could talk about Kant, who strictly observed the schedule and went for a walk at 6 pm sharp. It could be used to check the clock. Maybe the neighbors did.
Or about a writer who wrote ironically before work for 2-3 hours and after work the same amount and composed an unimaginable bunch of works. King talks about this in his autobiographical book How to Write Books. The name of the original will not tell the Russian reader anything, so it will not overload his memory.
The poem by S. Ya. Marshak and the modern context
However, all of them can be surpassed by an absent-minded person from Basseinaya Street. An amazing thing, probably, S. Ya. Marshak did not even suspect that after some 75 years (the work was published in 1930), people would arise who, in all seriousness, would behave like an absent-minded person, only, unlike the hero of the poem, they will put on their heads not pans, but colanders. Moreover, believing that in this way they are fighting for freedom with terrible force. It is difficult to say whether the other world exists or not, but if the revolutionaries of all times and peoples are alive, then they died of laughter a second time, observing such “resistance”. By the way, it is not even very clear what these people oppose. Yes, yes, we remember how it all began.
Our task now is to answer the question in what meaning the word “original” is used, and we cheerfully and boldly fulfill it. You can treat eccentrics as you like, but one thing is clear: they do not let us get bored. Of course, it’s a little tiring when the rest of the world is just having fun, but maybe this is a return from the previous century, then people mostly sobbed, now let them laugh heartily. And in order to somehow name what is happening around, the concept of “original” will be very useful to us. We have already analyzed the meaning of the word.
