Writing any scientific work, whether it is a term paper, diploma, master's or dissertation, always ends with its defense in front of an expert commission and those present who are interested in the topic and issues.
Writing a thesis is a multi-stage and time-consuming process that requires competence from the researcher. One of the most important stages is the preparation for the final - the defense of the work, at which the author must submit a report, presentation and handout for the diploma.
For an effective and memorable performance you need:
- prepare a competent speech;
- choose the optimal style of oral presentation. Text written in a scientific style will not always be well perceived by the ear;
- prepare a handout that will help those present to understand the topic, it is easier to perceive various kinds of data.
Scientific results in most cases involve quantitative indicators, graphic drawings,organized tables. A handout is an illustrative presentation of the main steps and conclusions of a research project, designed to facilitate understanding, interest listeners, and provoke discussion.
A presentation created in any graphics editor can be duplicated in paper form for broadcasting it on a projector during protection. Such handouts are offered to members of the commission for the convenience of its perception.
Functional purpose and advantages of illustrative cards:
- each person can view the data individually;
- those present determine for themselves the necessary time to study the information contained in the handout;
- it is possible during the speaker's speech and discussion to repeatedly return to a particular figure, table, diagram and formulate questions;
- interested participants in the discussion can take the handout with them for further detailed acquaintance with it.
Unlike the above, the electronic presentation has a sequential nature and a clear time to hold one frame on the projector.
How to draw attention to handouts?
The speaker needs to take care that the prepared additional material is not left without attention. If the listeners simply lay out the illustrations on the tables and do not mention them, then they are probably soand remain untouched.
In the report, it is recommended to focus the attention of the audience on a particular slide.
Using introductory phrases in the right places according to the text of the report will help to emphasize and captivate people to watch.
For example:
- “…in table 3 you can see these results…”;
- “…illustration 2.2 more clearly demonstrates what we said…”;
- “…if you study the data of slide 5, it will become clear to you that…”;
- "…check out the diagram in the 6th illustration, which confirms the announced results of our thesis research."
Such references in the course of the report will help those present to understand which part of it corresponds to a fragment of the handout.
