Voronezh province existed until 1928. What cities were included in it? What provinces did it border on? And when was it formed?
Before answering these questions, we should remember what a province is. How is it different from the region?
Province
This term is understood as the highest unit of administrative-territorial division. This concept appeared in the Petrine era, during the organization of an absolute state. There is no difference between such concepts as "province" and "region". But in 1929, the first went out of use, and the second came in its place.
Education
Voronezh Governorate was established in 1725. It consisted of five provinces. Since 1767 - four. Previously, this province was called Azov. In 1779, as a result of the Catherine's reform, the Voronezh region was divided into two separate governorships. Then, under Paul I, it was again transformed into a separate administrative unit.
Voronezh province existed until 1928. Subsequently, it became part of the Central Black Earth Region. Its center was Voronezh. The Central Black Earth region also included the Tambov and Oryol provinces. From the first, the Voronezh province bordered on the southeast. From Orlovskaya - in the west. Other provinces with which it bordered are Kursk, Tambov, Kharkov and the Don Cossacks. The Voronezh region was formed in the thirties.
Provinces
In the second half of the eighteenth century, the Voronezh province consisted of four provinces. The composition of the cities in each of them also changed over the course of two hundred years. Provinces that were part of this province:
- Voronezh.
- Eletskaya.
- Tambovskaya.
- Shatskaya.
In 1775 the provinces were abolished. The districts have been preserved. It should be understood as the territory of land, the names of which appeared in the Middle Ages and were used not only in Russia, but also in other states of Eastern Europe.
Villages of the Voronezh province - several dozen settlements. Their name is not always original. There were only four villages called "Krasnoe" in one of the provinces of the Voronezh province.
Counties
This word means the lowest administrative units in the Russian Empire. With the abolition of the provinces, there were no more counties. In 1779, the Voronezh province consisted of fifteen administrative divisions. Among them are Voronezh, Pavlovsk, Zadonsk districts. Their composition has changed several times. Counties of the Voronezh province since 1825:

Until 1727, the provinces were divided into districts. These administrative-territorial units are the same as counties. In 1926 the composition of the province changed again. But the administrative center remained the same.
The history of Voronezh is connected with the change in the composition of the province. Several important events in the period 1709-1929 should be named.
Voronezh
Since 1709, this city was part of the Azov province. Six years later, Voronezh became the center of the province. And in 1725 it was named after this city. In the second half of the eighteenth century, an educational institution, a pharmacy, a hospital, a home for the disabled were opened in Voronezh.
As you know, in this era, urban buildings were mostly wooden. That is why fires often happened. After one of them, by decree of the Empress, the construction of Voronezh began according to a new plan. Under Vasily Chertkov, who was appointed viceroy since 1782, a complete redevelopment of the city was carried out. The history of Voronezh at the beginning of the nineteenth century is connected with the development of cultural life. A theater was opened and newspapers were published regularly.
In 1905, in Voronezh, like other Russian cities, riots broke out. One day, martial law was even declared.
In 1926, long-distance telephone communication was carried out in Voronezh and the first tram line was opened. Since 1934 the city has become the administrative center of the Voronezharea.
In the twenties, in the province, as well as throughout the country, there was a process of formation of new administrative-territorial units. Namely, the village councils, which, in turn, were formed around the authorities with the appropriate name. Their number in the last year of the existence of the Voronezh province reached 1147 units.
