In simple everyday speech, the word "correlated" can be heard extremely rarely, we either replace this concept with a simple synonymous one, or do not use it at all. The concept of "correlation" is widely used by journalists, scientists and political scientists. Let's see why.

Definition

It has long been noticed that all the processes that occur in an organized system somehow affect each other and the system itself. Of course, such connections are not superficial, but nevertheless, upon closer examination, they are found. Speaking about these relationships, we use the term "correlation" and its derivatives - this is correlated, correlate. Correlation is not only a connection, it is a mutual relationship or mutual dependence. And the correlated one is one of the objects entering into this relationship.

Rise

In the scientific community, the concept of correlation was first used by paleontologist Georges Cuvier. He studied anatomy and made an incredible discovery: he formulated the law of the ratio of parts, according to which any changes in the structure of an animal organ necessarily lead tochanges in other organs, that is, here correlated is an organ that will entail changes in other organs. This discovery greatly helped the scientist to restore the holistic appearance of the animal only from a fragment of the fossil.

Well, the concept familiar to statistics was fixed later thanks to the works of biologist Francis G alton.

The concept in statistics

In statistics, a correlated object is an object that appears to us as a statistical relationship between two quantities that do not depend on each other. If the value of one value changes, then the value of the other also changes. If only the characteristics of the quantity change, then the correlation has nothing to do with it.

The level of mutual dependence is measured in the range from -1 to +1. This is the correlated coefficient.

  1. If the correlation coefficient is +1, then with an increase in one value, the other will also increase. Example: A rise in the price of a valuable stock leads to a rise in the price of another equally valuable stock.
  2. If the correlation coefficient is -1, then with an increase in one value, the other, negatively correlated, decreases.
  3. If the correlation coefficient is 0, then there is no mutual relationship, and any dependencies are random.

What is "correlate"? There is nothing complicated here, because it is just a derived verb from a noun. To correlate is to be interconnected with some object in some way.
