Everything has happened in the history of Russia. It is not surprising that contemporaries are well acquainted with prison life: from the stories of relatives and friends, from textbooks and fiction. One of the most terrifying words associated with the restriction of freedom is "punishment cell". They scare the convicts and frighten negligent students with it, painting a bleak future in colors if they are lazy or engage in illegal activities. How is it really?

The borrowing happened at the time of the heyday of Russian-German relations, when sonorous foreign terms appeared along with new technologies and customs. The German karzer is derived from the Latin carcer. Both concepts are a punishment cell, known to the inhabitants of the 21st century. In former times, it was interpreted somewhat more broadly:

Previously, the definition also indicated a building or institution, today it only refers to a specific room with special requirements for the maintenance of prisoners.
