With continued urbanization, big cities are expanding at an ever-increasing pace. People see for themselves more attractive life prospects in megacities. The capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, is no exception. The population of the city is growing rapidly, threatening to exceed four million in the near future. Already now the daily population (the number of permanent residents in the city and those who come from the suburbs to work and study) is 3.98 million people. In the future, this figure could be much higher.
National composition
Most of the city's residents are Ukrainians. But the representation of Russians, Belarusians, Poles is also large. In addition, Jews, Moldovans, Crimean Tatars, Greeks can be distinguished from national groups. Kyiv, whose population is quite heterogeneous in composition, mostly considers Russian as an interethnic language of communication. Ukrainian speech, which is recognized as the state language, is not often heard on the streets of the city. Most of the inhabitants prefer to communicate in the language of Pushkin, which is understandable to people of allnationalities. The population of Kyiv (2013) according to official data was 2.8 million people.
Religion
Historically, the main religion of the capital is Orthodoxy. There are many in the city
historical sites and temples that are cultural monuments. It is known that Kyiv, whose population was the first to be baptized in Russia, was the center of Eastern Slavic Orthodoxy. Christianity in Ukraine is traditionally divided into two branches that compete with each other, which is strongly manifested in the capital. In addition, Catholicism is quite developed in the city, which is practiced by people from the western regions and Poles. Crimean Tatars brought Islam with them.
Prospects for development
Most European countries have demographic problems. Thus, the population of Ukraine has been declining in the last decade. For the first time, the growth of demographic indicators was recorded in 2010. In the twenty-first century, there is a positive trend in the capital. The population of Kyiv (2013) increased by 30.7 thousand people. Scientists predict a significant increase in residents by 2025. So, when drawing up a plan for the development of the capital, experts included in it a population indicator of 4 million people. Among the growth factors are urban. That is, the city will grow at the expense of visitors who want to settle in the capital. Natural population growth, despite the programs to stimulate the birth rate, remains unattainable for Kyiv. Most
families have no more than one child. Whereas to increase the population, according to statistics, there should be two or three. Unfortunately, the standard of living does not encourage families to have children.
Several historical facts
The first historical information about the population of Kyiv dates back to the 17th century. According to these documents, then ten thousand people lived in the city. In the process of natural growth and migration, this figure has increased one and a half times over two decades. I must say that Kyiv, whose population has always been multinational, grew rapidly. Due to its convenient geographical position, it has long been the center of crafts, and later the center of the country's cultural traditions.
