Nikolai Orlov is a prince and a Russian diplomat. His family belongs to an old family. He was an ambassador in Brussels, Berlin, Paris. Nikolai Alekseevich was the only and dearly beloved son of the man who became the founder of the Orlov family.
Nikolai Orlov: biography
Born April 27, 1827. His father was Prince Alexei Fedorovich Orlov, and his mother was Olga Alexandrovna (maiden name Zherebtsova).
The boy studied at home. Then he began to study the course of jurisprudence, which was read for the son of Emperor Nicholas II - Konstantin Nikolayevich. Baron Korf taught him.
In 1843 he was honored to become a page of the royal court. In the summer of 1845, he passed the officer's examination at the Corps of Pages with honors. After testing, he was assigned to the Life Guards.
On June 5, 1846, he became the adjutant wing of Nicholas I. A little later, he became a lieutenant and began to accompany Konstantin Nikolayevich on his travels abroad.
In 1849 he took part in the war with Hungary. In the Hungarian company he received a distinction and was promoted to captain.
After that, becoming commander in chief, he went to Warsaw. There awardedthe order of St. Vladimir. For the next two years, he again began to accompany the sovereign on trips around his homeland and abroad.
In the winter of 1851, he was sent to serve in the Department of the General Staff. A few months later he began to serve in the office of the military ministry. In 1855 he received the rank of colonel. He was sent to fight against the Turks on the Danube. Under his command, the fort of Arab-Tabia was stormed. There he became crippled - he lost an eye and received nine wounds. The Emperor awarded him the Order of St. George of the 4th degree and presented a golden saber. Nikolai went to Italy to treat his wounds, he spent a year and a half there. After treatment, he received the rank of major general and appointment to the retinue of the emperor. The prince died in France on March 17, 1885.
Prince's personal life
In his youth, Nikolai Orlov was in love with Pushkin's daughter, Natalya Alexandrovna. He really wanted to take her as his wife, but his father categorically did not even want to hear about it. Instead, her father married Olga Panina for him, but the couple's relationship did not grow together.
Nikolai Orlov married in 1858 to Princess Ekaterina Trubetskoy. She was a very beautiful and well-educated girl. Its supervisor was the writer Moritz Hartmann. Princess Trubetskaya did not want to give her daughter for a mere mortal. She dreamed of a son-in-law, an artist or a scientist. Nevertheless, the environment was able to convince the princess that Nikolai would be a good match for her daughter and would be a caring and loving husband. The wedding ceremony took place in France.

At first, the nurses did not even dare to bandage him. His death was expected from minute to minute, but he miraculously survived. His treatment took place in Italy. The wounds tormented him mercilessly. One eye was missing, the other saw very poorly. The prince stopped reading, the servants helped him. At first, small fragments were taken out of his head. The damage made itself felt with severe headaches. The prince was uncomfortable even with a short conversation - he confused his thoughts, words and tried to finish it as soon as possible.

As a writer Nikolai is known from his historical essays. He is the author of "Essay on the Franco-Prussian War".
