History of Creation
It begins with a document signed by Emperor Nicholas I in 1840 that a medical faculty should be opened at Kiev University. The need for such a decision of the king was due to several reasons. The first was that the Vilna Academy, which was located in Vilna (now Vilnius), was to be transferred to Kyiv. The second was due to the high need for doctors, which escalated every time epidemics and wars broke out.
First lectures started in September1841. This is how the medical faculty of Kyiv University named after St. Volodymyr appeared. For some time it remained a division of the university. It received the status of an independent educational institution much later - in 1920. Then, under the name of the Institute of He alth, several medical faculties located at different universities and institutes were united. The newly formed educational institution changed its name several times until it became the Kyiv Medical Institute in 1921.
In wartime, the institute was evacuated to Chelyabinsk, but in 1943 classes were resumed. Another significant date in the history of the university is the assignment of the name of Alexander Bogomolets to it. The last changes to the name of the university were made in 1995 - then it received the status of a national one.
