Calcium nitrate (calcium nitrate) is a crystalline, very solid, white compound that is odorless.
This substance is very hygroscopic and dissolves easily in water. It should be noted that calcium nitrate can quickly crystallize. In this case, three types of crystalline hydrates are formed. Its important disadvantage is the property of caking. This must be taken into account for proper storage. So, calcium nitrate should be stored in special sealed packages (polypropylene bags).
It should also be noted that under normal conditions this compound is fire and explosion-proof, non-flammable and stable within -60 - +155 ° С, but when working with it, you should use overalls, as well as personal protective equipment.
Calcium nitrate: application
Calcium nitrate contains 15% nitrogen and 26% CaO, which allows it to be widely used in agriculture to compensate for the lack of these elements in the soil, as well as to feed plants.
Sufficient nitrogen concentration is necessary for the development of leaf mass, synthesis of amino acids, proteins and chlorophyll. Calcium is responsible for the formation of new cells, helps to strengthen the trunk and roots of plants. Given this, calcium nitrate is used for yellowing of the leaves and their curling into a ringlet, the appearance of punctate necrosis in the form of small round dark brown spots, as well as for a weak root system, its decay and cessation of plant stem growth. In addition, the use of this fertilizer prevents the development of blossom end rot in tomatoes, as well as burns of lettuce leaves. It is also worth noting that calcium nitrate, when applied to acidic soil, eliminates excess concentrations of iron and manganese.
Calcium nitrate is used in the form of liquid root or foliar dressings. In this case, drip irrigation systems, special installations, hose, fan or knapsack sprayers can be used. I must say that the norm of the working solution of calcium nitrate is generally accepted and depends on the type of top dressing and plant species.
It should also be noted that calcium nitrate is a physiological alkaline fertilizer, so it can be applied to all types of soil. It cannot be combined with simple superphosphate, but it is allowed to combine calcium nitrate with other fertilizers immediately before use. After the work done, wash your face and hands thoroughly with soap and water.
I must say that calcium nitrate is used not only as a fertilizer for plants. It is also an admixture for concrete, whichallows you to significantly increase its strength. In addition, this compound prevents corrosion of reinforcement, protects building materials from exposure to low temperatures, is used in the production of refrigerator brine, various reagents and fiberglass, and also as an important component of explosives.
