When a person is lazy or unwilling to name a newly discovered phenomenon or a formulated concept by its name, he gives new meanings to old words. Just by analogy and similarity of the image, as it happened with the belt. What does a simple and short word mean? Are we talking about the details of clothing or did the discussion touch on geography? And if the interlocutor is an astronomer and a fan of the constellation Orion?

Initially, it was just a piece of clothing. A wide woven or leather band wraps around the waist to keep the hems of loose-fitting garments closed. It was possible to mount a purse with money or weapons on it. Phraseologism about tightening the belt indicates not only an actual attempt to pull off the figure, but also a reduction in size, and a person’s desire to save on their own needs.
Many ribbons and wide cords from different walks of life have adopted the word as part of their name:
- rescue item - supports a drowning person on the water surface;
- healing p. - helps to fixbody defects and/or reduces pain;
- p. for tools - an item for carrying items useful in work, serves as a replacement for a bag.
Are we talking about sports discipline? Then the familiar definition of "belt" is embodied in the original construction of leather or substitutes. Metal badge with the champion's name embossed, federation coat of arms and decorative inserts. The appearance changes, but in itself such a thing is status, it gets the best. Often serves as a substitute for bowls and goblets from team sports.
Also, from the Middle Ages, modern museums received a specific device to prevent adultery. The classic chastity belt was securely closed around the genitals of the partner (partner) and did not allow the act of adultery to take place. It may seem cruel to some, but it was considered reasonable from the point of view of the people of the past, who spent decades in military campaigns.

Native speakers need not worry: subconsciously, the formula “girdling something” instantly pops up in the head and suggests the correct use of the word. Most of the time, professional and scientific interpretations are not used in everyday communication. In everyday conversation, most likely, we are talking about clothes.
