Early history of the university

The Land Surveying School, founded in 1779, was named after Konstantin Pavlovich, the second grandson of Catherine the Great. In this organizational form, it existed until May 10, 1835, when, by order of Nicholas I, it was turned into the Konstantinovsky Land Survey Institute.

In 1930, the university was divided into two institutes. From the department of geodesy, the Moscow Geodetic Institute was created, and the land management department turned into the Moscow Institute of Land Management Engineers.

Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography has become an important center of design thought. It was in this institution that they developed the design of the apparatus that photographed the lunar surface. In 1981, the Institute establisheda separate faculty of applied cosmonautics, which trained specialists to work with spacecraft.
