Like any other manifestation of human culture, initially speech was formed under the influence of the outside world, wildlife. Observing the behavior of animals, noticing the features of character or physiology, the people created original and very accurate concepts. Sneaking is one of the clearest examples of imitation of the most dangerous representatives of the fauna. Philologists will help to understand the nuances.
Where does the poison in words come from?
Today, echidna means a funny creature that resembles a hedgehog and at the same time lays eggs. But the Australian snake from the asp family is as close as possible to the original meaning. After all, the traditional ancient Greek term ἔχιδνα was translated like this:
- viper;
- snake.
When migrating to the Russian language, a definition appeared for absolutely any poisonous snake. Now it is considered obsolete, although it is used in ancient sources, as well as in fiction to give color to the text.
How do ill-wishers poison?
Jokes about relationships at work, jokes about mother-in-law and mother-in-law did not arise from scratch. The verb "sneaky" has the worst meaning, comparing the interlocutor with poisonous reptiles. No wonder there are expressions:
- poison dripping from the tongue;
- poison life, etc.
Brutal words can drive those around you into a frenzy. Spoil nerves, unbalance, provoke active aggression, in order to later publicly accuse of the attack and get personal gain. A malicious person does this with a predetermined goal or at the behest of the soul, because of education. And the corresponding verb breaks up into interpretations:
- evil sneer;
- taunt;
- sting.
Similar behavior is typical of hooligans, found in children's environment and among older people. It is condemned, but in a mild form it is present in all areas of life.
How does it manifest itself in the 21st century?
Young people prefer a modern synonym. Now to be sarcastic is to demonstrate verbal toxicity. If before the evil-tongued gentlemen tried to touch on the features of appearance, character, now the list is almost endless:
- political views;
- religious beliefs;
- sexual orientation;
- clothing, makeup, hairstyle;
- musical tastes;
- place of residence/work, etc.
You canto be ironic in a friendly way, pointing out small flaws in order to suggest options for solving the problem. But in dealing with strangers, this is unacceptable, it will easily lead to a serious conflict. Always remain polite, and if some statements can offend the interlocutor, try to convey the idea correctly. Or shut up altogether. If words won't solve anything, there's no need to stir up someone else's soul once again!
