Participle is a part of speech formed from a verb and having its features, but being independent. It also has the properties of an adjective. A participial turnover (an example of which we will consider below) is a combination of a participle with dependent words (or a word). So, let's learn more about this part of speech and its isolation when writing.

General information

Communion. Example: playing.

Participle turnover. Example: boy playing.

The participle is formed from such a part of speech as a verb. The following suffixes are added to it:

  • -om-;
  • -eat-;
  • -en-;
  • -vsh-;
  • -nn-;
  • -im-;
  • -ug-;
  • -well-;
  • -sh-.

As mentioned earlier, the participle has the features of a verb (since it is formed from it) and an adjective (since it answers the question “what?” in a sentence).

How does the participial phrase stand out in writing?

1. Example:The boy, who was afraid of Nikolai, nevertheless decided to go out and say hello to him.

In this case, the adverbial turnover is separated by two commas, one of which comes immediately after the word being defined ("boy"). The second comma closes the turnover. In all such cases, the allocation of the participle construction is mandatory.

2. Participial. Example: A boy who was frightened of Nikolai decided to go out and say hello to him.

When constructing a sentence like this, the participle turns before the word being defined ("boy"), so it is not necessary to separate it with commas. Exception. If the word being defined is a personal pronoun, then it is obligatory to mark the participial phrase following before or after it with commas.

Example: He was afraid of Nikolai, but decided to go out and say hello to him.

3. Example: Tired after a long journey, the climber stopped climbing.

In this case, it is necessary to isolate the participial turnover, since it reveals causal relationships and explains the sentence. Thus, the participial turnover stands out when writing. We have already considered its definition earlier, and now we will give a few more examples of it.

Separate participial turnover. Examples:

  • Rain that started about an hour ago washed out the road, and travelers had totake longer to find her.
  • Grandma put her special porridge on the table and invited me to dinner.
  • Sasha and Tanya's parents went on vacation by car,bought shortly beforethis.
  • A participial turnover that does not require emphasis. Examples:

    • The nuts picked the other day in the forest seemed much tastier than store-bought ones.
    • Wind-blown hair was not as beautiful and attractive.
    • Nestled in the mountains, the village was the most populous in the area.

    Pay attention

    Don't confuse the participle and the adjective formed from the verb. The main difference here is that in the first case the word means action, while in the second it is just a description of the object. To distinguish between these two parts of speech, ask a question and determine what exactly the given word form is in the sentence.

    Verbal adjective. For example: boiled beets (answers the question "what", but it is formed from the word "cook").

    Communion: cars loaded with grain.
