At the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries, the aristocracy of Copenhagen was one of the richest in Europe, and Danish trading companies had their colonies all over the world. Many historical monuments in the city were erected during this period.

Monuments to famous Danes

A monument to Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen has been erected on the outskirts of Town Hall Square. Curiously, the sculpture has smooth, shiny knees, as children often sit on them to take pictures. Nearby is the city hall of the early 20th century in the neo-Renaissance style with a gilded statue of the bishopAbsalon, who founded Copenhagen. The capital of Denmark is also famous for its tower over 100 meters high with the famous World Clock. The largest square in Copenhagen - the New King's Square (Kogens Nytorv) - is famous for the equestrian statue of King Christian V, who ruled Denmark and Norway in the 17th century. It was installed during the life of the king.

In addition to the royal palace of Christiansborg, the city is also home to Charlottenborg Palace, which has been home to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts for more than 200 years. Amalienborg Royal Palace is a baroque palace ensemble of the middle of the 18th century, where the residence of the monarch is located to this day. And in the Royal Park there is Rosenborg Palace with three impressive towers in the Renaissance style - the summer residence of Christian IV. Today the building houses a museum of the royal dynasty.

In parks and gardens

Located between the moat of the citadel and the port, Langelinie is the most popular promenade in the wonderful city of Copenhagen. The capital is rich in green parks, which are located next to the embankment. In the botanical garden you can visit a delightful palm hall, a greenhouse and a museum of minerals and stones. There is an observatory nearby. Yet nothing compares to the popularity of the Tivoli amusement park, located on the other side of the city.

Nyboder Manor with narrow rows of yellow houses was built inmid-17th century by Christian IV for 600 families of sailors who served in the navy. This is one of the oldest residential areas - laconic and strikingly simple. The buildings of this area have become one of the attractions that Copenhagen is famous for. The capital annually receives a huge number of tourists who want to see the historical sites of this beautiful city.

Legendary Goddess Gefion

Gefion Fountain (1908) is installed at the entrance to Churchill Park, reminiscent of the emergence of the largest island in Denmark - Zeeland. According to this legend, the fertility goddess Gefion had to find land for her father, the god Odin. The Swedish king Gylfi promised her to give her as much land as she could plow in one day and one night. The goddess turned four of her sons into bulls and dug up most of the land, turning it into an island. The resulting cavity was filled with water - this is how Venus Lake appeared.

Sights to see in Copenhagen include the Borsen (17th century stock exchange building), Grundtvig Church, the new Carlsberg Glyptothek, the Bertel Thorvaldsen Museum, the writer Karen Blixen and the Guinness World Records Museum.

This is not a complete list of attractions of the magnificent European city of Copenhagen. What country's capital can still boast such a colorful variety of historical sites and cultural monuments?
