He was opposed by opponents who sought to find evidence of the falsity of the statements and brought their own counterarguments. The result of the dispute was assessed by the master, speaking, in fact, inthe role of a judge. He determined whose arguments had the weight.
Disputes are some formal ways of conducting a debate. In the Middle Ages, there were rules: references to written authoritative sources were taken as arguments, and the evidence of each side was subjected to careful analysis. The purpose of disputes was to establish scientific or theological truth. This method was used to resolve disputes between different faiths.
Main conditions
Can any dispute today be called a dispute? Public discussion of any problem (scientific, social or religious) must be subject to a number of conditions:
- Before the discussion begins, participants should have a good understanding of the subject of the dispute, the problem that will be put on the agenda.
- It is necessary that the main thesis (the hypothesis of ways to solve the problem), as well as the arguments in its defense, be known in advance.
- Disputes are debates, during which a constructive solution must be found.
Participants are usually divided into two groups: opponents and proponents. The second put forward a hypothesis and try to be convincing. It is important for them to be understood and gain the support of the audience. Disputations are class hours in an active form, the preparation of which takes at least a month. It is important that students not only know the topic of discussion and questions proposed during the debate, but also develop their own position on them.
The right choice of a leader plays a big role, which will create the necessary mood and atmosphere of goodwill and will not allow participants to deviate from the main topic of discussion. It is desirable that a well-prepared adult lead the debate at the middle level.
