St. Petersburg State Academy of Veterinary Medicine invites you to get veterinary education in St. Petersburg. History and speci alties of the Academy
At the beginning of the 19th century, scientists in St. Petersburg thought about the need to train specialists in veterinary medicine, because infectious animal diseases were very common on the territory of the state - plague, pneumonia, anthrax raged. In 1808, a veterinary department was established in the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy functioning in the city. This is how the roots of the current university were laid.
The department worked until 1873. Then it was transformed into a veterinary institute. After 10 years, education althe establishment was closed. The city stopped training veterinarians. Changes took place over several decades. In 1919, the Petrograd Veterinary and Zootechnical Institute was opened. From this educational institution, the St. Petersburg Veterinary Academy grew in the future.
Currently, the academy is the leading veterinary organization in which people receive higher education in several existing areas of undergraduate and specialist studies:

Veterinary
Offering the direction "Veterinary" to applicants, the academy fulfills its historical mission, because it was with the training of veterinarians that the history of the educational institution began at the beginning of the 19th century. Students who study in this speci alty are given very good knowledge. Classes are taught by highly qualified teachers. Approximately 75% of employees have advanced degrees.
St. Petersburg State Veterinary Academy has an important advantage - 8 museums. Students study anatomical exhibits, get acquainted with macropreparations on pathologies and various diseases in animals. Students are also offered drawings made in the 30s of the last century and reflecting diseases.
Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise
Veterinary and sanitary expertise is an actual and demanded area of training at the academy. The corresponding faculty was opened in 2003. Future veterinary and sanitary doctors here study animal anatomy, toxicology, microbiology, internal diseases, infections, parasites. After completing their studies, graduates can:
- assess the condition of artificial and natural reservoirs;
- engage in artificial reproduction and commercial cultivation of fish, food and fodder invertebrates, algae;
- protect aquatic biological resources;
- ensure the environmental safety of fishery reservoirs, etc.
Entrance tests and passing scores
People with secondary general education enter the university only on the basis of the results of the Unified State Examination. In the absence of any subject, it is impossible to enter, because entrance tests are not provided for this category of persons. Applicants with professional education have a choice - to take subjects in the form of the Unified State Examination or pass the entrance examinations offered by the St. Petersburg State Academy of Veterinary Medicine. In total, applicants take 3 subjects. In all areas of training, they are the same:
- Russian;
- math;
- biology.
To apply, you must pass at least 28 points in mathematics, and at least 40 points in Russian and biology. These points do not guarantee admission to the budget. Other people do not advise to come here. On the basis of the academy there is a clinic where specialists provide veterinary services. Some pet owners speak negatively about doctors. According to people, these specialists do not have a sufficient level of knowledge, do not have important personal qualities, so they cannot teach students anything.
In conclusion, it is worth noting that the St. Petersburg Veterinary Academy is the oldest university in Russia that trains veterinarians, biologists and other specialists.
