Behind 5 years of studying at a university that has already become a native, sometimes difficult, but more often fun and unobtrusive mastering the skills of the chosen profession, and now the last frontier is already ahead - the defense of a diploma. The speech that you must read at the same time confuses both notorious lazy people and potential red diploma students. In fact, in the allotted 5-10 minutes, you should briefly, but fully and profitably, highlight your thesis so that the commission understands what is at stake, but does not go into details that are difficult even for you. There are two directly opposite ways to write a dissertation speech. Someone seeks to fit into it the "non-sticky" and tell in detail all, even the most minor, little things. Others, on the contrary, smooth out all the work with general phrases, up to the topic, and it becomes unclear to the commission what the person was doing at all. Of course, both of these approaches are extremes that should not be taken.
Thesis defense speech must meet a number of very specific requirements:
- Be moderately brief.
- Reflect the theme of the work, purpose, tasks, relevance, its main methodsprogress and results.
- If there is a practical application of your work, this should also be reflected in the report.
In addition, it is important to adhere to a certain pattern and take into account the time frame. The graduation speech has the following approximate structure:
-
Appeal to the members of the commission (“Dear members of the commission, let me bring to your attention the thesis of a student full name on the topic “…”. Supervisor - regalia, full name. The work was carried out at the department …, on the basis of …. With the support of … ".).
- Relevance of the topic - 3-5 sentences reflecting the current state of research on your topic and their practical significance.
- Goal, tasks, subject and object, methods (briefly) of doing work.
- The main results of the work (“As a result of the research, it was found … what you see on the graph / diagram / figure / table …”). For clarity, in this part of the report, it is recommended to use handouts or a presentation on a multimedia projector.
- Conclusions reflecting the objectives of the study and corresponding to the results obtained. Depending on their volume and the remaining time, you can apply the trick: "The conclusions were made during the report, so let me not read them." Generally no objections.
- Approbation of the work (“The results of the work were tested at scientific and practical conferences “…”, there are also acts of implementing the results of the work into production “…”).
- At the end of the report, thanks are expressed to various organizations and people whowho assisted you in the preparation of the work.
- Final word ("I'm done, thank you for your attention. Listening to your questions!").
The dissertation speech also has a certain time frame, which may vary depending on the particular university, but, as a rule, is 8-10 minutes. The best option for breaking down the report by time is as follows:
- Greeting, relevance of the topic, goals, objects and methods should take up to 3 minutes.
- Discussion of the results with visual aids is allowed up to 5 minutes.
- Conclusions, approbation, thanks and closing remarks - 2 minutes.
Total, regulated 10 minutes. As practice shows, in order to meet the given time frame, it is necessary to rehearse the report at least 1-2 times at home. Although many experts recommend rehearsing in front of a mirror, it is more effective to involve friends and loved ones as an audience - this will help you less worry about the commission.
The preparation of the report should be treated as responsibly as possible, not only composing the text (4-6 pages A4), but also practicing the pace, voice, intonation (maximum confidence, no hesitation and parasitic words. Average pace of speech, moderate gestures will create a good impression with the audience), since the thesis speech is often even more important than the diploma itself - as a rule, no one reads the work, and your success depends on its presentation.
