Virgin soil - what is it?
This is a densely vegetated land that has almost never been plowed up mechanically or manually. In its root-inhabited soil layer, virgin lands contain a large amount of nitrogen, humus and other nutrients for plants. These patches of land are very compact and resilient. In arid places they are the driest, in rainy places they are moistened to the maximum. It is difficult for weed seeds to break through the virgin soil, the activity of reproduction of microorganisms is reduced here.
Classification of virgin soil types
- Steppe is collected on chestnut soils and chernozems (Askania-Nova nature reserve in the Kherson region, Stone steppe in the Voronezh region).
- Semi-deserts are characterized by gray soils, brown desert or light chestnut soils (Trans-Urals, Siberia, Kazakhstan).
- Virgin floodplain widespread in the non-black earth. To develop its lands, one has to producepreliminary drainage of the soil using special equipment (Far East, Siberia, Transcaucasia).

Familiar expressions about virgin soil
The well-known expression "Unplowed field" means precisely the virgin land, which is difficult to plow. "It's up to you to plow and plow" - this statement also explains that there is a lot of work to be done, and the phrase itself is associated with hard work in the virgin lands. "To plow a field is not to cross a pond" - another expression that shows how difficult it is to put the land in order. The phrase can also be attributed to labor in the virgin lands.
