History
RGPU im. Herzen was originally called the St. Petersburg Orphanage, which was founded in 1797. At the same time, Empress Maria Feodorovna took the Orphanage under her wing, who madeeverything to make the issue of providing for orphans in Russia significant. In the institution, orphans were not only fed and given shelter over their heads, but also taught. It was within the walls of the Orphanage that the foundation of female pedagogical education in Russia was laid. Separate classes were created to train girls to become governesses, teachers, mentors, etc. In 1837, the institution became the Orphan's Institute, and in 1855 it received the name of Emperor Nicholas I.
Already by 1903, the Higher Women's Pedagogical Institute was established, which produced teachers for gymnasiums. It became the first state university in Russia for women.

The Department of Sociology and Religious Studies is very young, it was created in 2015, after the merger of the Departments of Sociology and Religious Studies, which previously existed separately. The department of sociology was organized in 1991 by professor A. Vorontsov. Training was conducted in two main areas: sociology and political science. The Department of Religious Studies was organized in 1964 by Professor N. Gordienko. The teachers of this department teach students in various disciplines, among which are sociology, the history of religion, demography and introduction to sociology. Department of Mathematics
The Faculty of Mathematics has existed at the university since 1918. Until 1957, it was called the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, but after that it was divided. The first dean, and later the head of the department, was a well-known talented mathematician Grigory Fikhtengolts. At first, there was only one department of higher mathematics. Then came the Department of Methods of Teaching Mathematics. In the 1930s, departments of mathematical analysis, geometry and algebra were created. Biology
The Faculty of Biology is rightfully considered one of the oldest at the university. It was organized as a separate structural unit in 1920. Until 1944 it was called the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Famous scientists of the country stood at its origins: A. Maksimov, K. Bykov, F. Skazkin, Yu. Polyansky, S. Gred, F. Tur, P. Borovitsky, etc. There is a lot of work behind each of these names. These people wrote monographs, conducted research, published textbooks. What this faculty is best known for is generations of teaching biology. Recently, the Faculty of Biology has switched to a two-level education system. The direction of teaching masters in the speci alties "Environmental Education", "Biology Education" and "General Ecology" is actively developing.
There are 4 departments at the faculty: anatomy and physiology of humans and animals, zoology, botany and methods of teaching biology and ecology. The material and technical base of the faculty is impressive. It includes a zoological museum, a laboratory of experimental zoology, an agricultural biostation in the village of Vyritsa, and an office for teaching biology and ecology.

RSPU St. Petersburg has its own media. Through the efforts of students, several newspapers are published. The oldest of them is the wall newspaper Life Calls!, which has been published since the 1960s. Initially, it was released only on New Year's Eve and March 8, but since 2010, students have decided to release it monthly. Newspapers are created by students of the Faculty of Mathematics.
Students of the Faculty of Social Sciences publish the newspaper "Twentieth Corps", which is printed in 10 copies. It has been published every month since 2002. In 2007, a monographic study was published that covered the history of this newspaper since its inception.
The Student Council of the University has been publishing the Herzen Bell newspaper since 2005. It is published as a supplement to the official newspaper of the university "Pedagogical News".
