It's no secret that many borrowed words in Russian have several meanings, so some people may be perceived differently. These include the word sleeve. This word has more than three known meanings, which will have to be de alt with.
Meanings of the word sleeve
So, what is a cartridge case. The original meaning of this word comes from the German hulse (shell). But in Russian, this word means not only a shell.
Basic meanings of the word:
- Artillery shell.
- Cartridge case of any small arms.
- Cylinder liner or cylinder liner.
- Cigarette sleeve.
Artillery and small arms case
Artillery cartridge case is one of the parts of artillery ammunition. In this case, it is something like a steel cup with thin walls and is intended for storing combat, powder charges or ignition agents (primers), as well as for protecting those same charges from moisture and unwanted damage.
It consists of two maincomponents:
- body;
- muzzle.
The body is usually made in a conical shape for ease of loading and increasing the stability of the shot trajectory. The muzzle has a round shape, and its walls are much thinner than the body. Such a design can easily ensure a tight and high-quality connection between the cartridge case itself and the projectile, as well as prevent the breakthrough of powder gas.
Like an artillery cartridge case, a cartridge case is part of the ammunition. It is also intended for the storage of powder charges. Together with it and the bullet fixed in the muzzle, it is a real cartridge, which, as mentioned earlier, is used as ammunition for any small arms, from a pistol to sniper rifles.
Cylindrical sleeve
If everything is more or less clear with artillery and small arms sleeves, then the cylinder sleeve can plunge some people into a stupor. And it is not surprising, because those citizens who do not deal with automobile engines, diesel locomotives or steam turbines may not know what a cylindrical sleeve is. The meaning of the word of this part is as follows - this is a special insert that can be changed and which is installed in the crankcase of a piston heat engine. Such a part is intended in order to reduce wear on rubbing surfaces. In addition, this part can greatly facilitate the repair of the engine.
There are two main groups of liners used in today's automotive industry:
- "wet" (manufactured and built in such a way as to be able to come into contact with engine coolant);
- “dry” (respectively, they cannot come into contact with engine coolant).
Regardless of the type of sleeve, it must have excellent wear resistance, strength, as well as anti-corrosion resistance. In addition, the cylinder sleeve is the part that must ensure the reliability of the seals at the junction between the head and the engine block.
Cigarette sleeve
Making your own cigarette is common among many heavy smokers. Especially, this phenomenon is common in foreign countries, where a pack of cigarettes costs two or even three times more than in the territory of the Russian Federation.
Firstly, this approach allows you to make cigarettes anytime and anywhere. A smoker can fill a cigarette with any tobacco from any manufacturer. Secondly, the process of "rolling" a cigarette allows you to make the further smoking procedure more meaningful in the eyes of the smoker. But, in addition to tobacco and the very basis for a cigarette (paper), a sleeve is also used to make a “hand-rolled cigarette” - this is what many smokers used to call a “bull”. In other words, ordinary rolled paper with a special filter made of acetate fiber installed inside.
As in a regular, factory-made cigarette, the sleeve with a filter installed in a “self-rolled” cigarette is designed to clean the inhaled smoke. That is, to reducethe amount of tar and nicotine that a smoker inhales daily with smoke. As you know, the positive effect of cleaning smoke from harmful impurities depends on the length, as well as on the diameter of the sleeve used and the pre-installed filter.
