This device came to Europe only in the second half of the 12th century with the Arabs, who borrowed it from the Chinese. Over the following centuries, the design of the compass improved.
Over time, scientists have discovered that the magnetic field of the planet Earth is not uniform, in addition, the poles drift. Due to these factors, sometimes the readings of the magnetic compass were incorrect. Therefore, a more reliable device was required. They became the gyrocompass, invented at the end of the 19th century.
In the 20th century, with the development of technology, a radio compass appeared, later replaced by electronic systems of GPS and the Russian GLONASS.
Due to the popularity of cell phones in the 21st century, the compass function in them can be performed by a mobile application using GPS. Anyone can download and use the Compass app on their phone.
