The article tells about what an anthology is, what it is, and in particular, anthologies of poetry and computer games are analyzed.
Art
In our age of an abundance of printed matter, it is hard to imagine that even some 150 years ago, the vast majority of people who inhabited the planet were illiterate. This problem is still relevant today: there are still many backward and underdeveloped countries in the world that pay very little attention to the education of their residents.
Writing has existed as such for several millennia, but almost always it has remained a kind of privilege, the lot of the elite, who could afford to spend time and money on teaching themselves or their children to read. By the way, in Europe there were even illiterate kings, which was considered absolutely normal, and all they could do was sign official documents.
Gradually everything changed, and people realized the importance of literature, books and the ability to read them. But mass literacy progressed very sluggishly, since, for example, in Russia for a long time there were only parochial schools, and compulsory primary education appeared at the beginning of the 20th century.
Anthology is…
But fortunately things are different now, andMost countries have introduced compulsory primary or secondary education. All this led to a sharp increase in the number of writers and books, which were once again very rare. The Internet is especially helpful in this - it has helped many young authors to get printed on paper. But for convenience and to reduce confusion, at all times literary works have been tried to be combined into anthologies. What it is? We'll figure it out.
Definition
Anthology is a collection of certain literary works by one or more authors. In both cases, they are related by a common theme, genre, or some other factors, thanks to which the combination of works under one cover or series of books became possible.
This word came to us from the ancient Greek language and, when translated literally, means “a meeting, a collection of flowers, a flower garden.”
In simpler terms, an anthology is a book, poem or literary work of a different kind, which, for convenience and simplicity, is much more profitable to place in one book or a series of them. There can be many reasons for this. For example, they do this with all the works of an eminent author, or they publish a collection of stories by authors of various, but united by a single meaning, the universe of action or themes. Or they create a series of books that include collections of detective stories from all the writers who have made a name for themselves in this genre.
This is done mainly because of convenience, but in our time, additional profit also plays an important role. Since a person, having seen a beautifully designed collection of works of a favorite author, probablywill buy, even if he has the works separately. So in the modern world an anthology is also an additional source of income for publishers.
Poetry
The first anthologies of a poetic kind in Russia began to be published at the beginning of the 19th century, which is not without reason called the century of poets and writers. The names of only the most famous authors and those who are in the school curriculum have survived to this day, but there were many more of them. So the anthology of Russian poetry in those days was very popular, however, as it is now. An additional reason for this was the fact that prose (novels or short stories) was then only gaining popularity.
Now such anthologies are published in a rich and beautiful design, and under their covers are combined the creations of both an individual writer, for example, Lermontov, and all the most popular at that time.
Other
Surely the word "anthology" is familiar to almost every child or teenager. And it's not that in our time children are so fond of reading, although there is such a thing too. Just at the beginning of general computerization and the wide distribution of computer games, their anthologies became very popular. True, they are becoming less and less common, and they flourished in the early and mid-2000s, when few people had the Internet, and people were still actively buying ordinary laser discs containing games. Their anthology was pirated, of course, but that didn't stop anyone.
As with literature, games toogrouped together on a specific basis. Because a lover of "shooters" is unlikely to be interested in a collection where other genres are mixed. Sometimes all parts of one game or just very close in genre were combined into an anthology. Despite the low quality and frequent "bugs", the games were still popular, as they cost significantly less than licensed editions, and contained almost a dozen games at once, unlike one or two licensed ones.
Conclusion
So we figured out what an anthology is. As you can see, this word can be applied not only in relation to literature. Sometimes you can even find an anthology of computer programs.
