Duke University, a private American research-based university, is very popular with college and high school graduates. Institution was founded in 1838 by Methodists and Quakers. The university received its real name much later, or rather, in 1924.
Founding History
The history of the establishment in question is quite simple. In 1838, a group of Quakers and Methodists founded a private school on this site, which after 4 years received the official name - the academy of the Union Institute. Over the next few years, the building changed its name until 1859.
Trinity College's main sponsors were Washington Duke and Juliana S. Carra, influential Methodists who made their fortunes from the lucrative tobacco industry. These two respected people donated a lot of money to the institution for development.
In 1896, Washington Duke donated about $100,000 to the college, but set a condition thatstated: "The doors of the institution must be open to both men and women." It was about gender equality, which Duke encouraged.
After 28 years, the son of famed tobacco magnate James B. Duke has donated over $40 million to medical, charitable and educational institutions. Trinity College also made the list. In turn, the president of the institution insisted that the building be renamed Duke University. In this case, the USA has replenished with another outstanding educational institution.
