Uncommon sentences in Russian are sentences consisting only of a grammatical basis. They do not have secondary members: circumstances, additions, definitions. Such sentences are usually extremely concise and simple both in structure and in meaning.

They can be two-part (consisting of a subject and a predicate) or one-part (only a subject or only a predicate). They can also be exclamatory and non-exclamatory, and even complicated homogeneousmembers.

Uncommon sentences, despite their simplicity and even some primitiveness, have a whole list of useful functions. For example:

  • They help to focus the reader's attention on a certain thought or idea, to give it weight and corresponding pathetic sound.
  • When describing actions, such sentences add dynamics, tension, help in describing suspense (tension, anxiety) and captivate the reader.
  • Characters who speak in uncommon sentences often sound weighty, stern, solid and personable. Each such remark can rightly be considered a strong statement.
  • Uncommon sentences are not descriptive. Authors use them to give the reader the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild and think of the details for themselves.

Of course, it is impossible to unambiguously define the entire list of numerous benefits and functions. Each author comes to his own style and finds his charm in uncommon sentences. All this is extremely subjective, and the listed stylistic tricks are only a pattern discovered by critics, but by no means an unambiguous rule.
