For thousands of years, society has diligently regulated every aspect of life in order to build an ideal order, ensure the peace of citizens and the rule of law. Therefore, to behave boldly is to violate the slightest prohibitions, prescribed and strictly enforced, or unspoken, but become a tradition. Such behavior is often condemned, it turns out to be a cause for discontent among relatives, colleagues, management or ordinary passers-by. But is it really that bad? Even minimal philological analysis speaks of an ambiguous reading.
How did the word come about?
Specialists call the Greek θρασύς as a source, which denoted a fearless person. In Old Church Slavonic, the concept of drzъ arose during translation, which then spread through the languages of Eastern Europe. One of the closest modern definitions for "impertinent" is the Polish dziarski:
- resolute;
- fast.
Implies the ability to make decisions in an emergency situation, regardless of danger or prescription. No negative connotations!
How is it interpreted today?
A radical degree of courage is arrogance. Over the course of many centuries, this meaning gradually came to the fore and is now the main one. Any teacher will no doubt answer what this “daring line of behavior” is and why it is bad. After all, in order to get nasty to a teacher, you also need a strong will, albeit directed at something bad. Basic meaning of the term in the 21st century:
- disrespectful;
- offensive;
- rough;
- arrogant.
To rebel against the authorities, to refuse to take on faith what was said by senior comrades, to go one's own way - this is bold! And pretty disrespectful. Young people most often show courage in communication when the alleged opponent does not want anything bad, but only tries to share experience, transfer knowledge.
In parallel, there are not obsolete, but rarely used interpretations. You can meet them within the framework of the book style and in rhetorical turns:
- Defiant, with a touch of disregard for danger.
- Overconfident, haughty.
The daring mind does not back down before extraordinary tasks, is capable of extravagant solutions. For example, for an equally decisive robbery of a heavily guarded bank.
What is the final score?
From the examples, it is obvious that the word indicates the ability of a person to overcome obstacles. Is acting arrogant a good thing or a bad thing? It depends entirely on the context, the specific situation. If a person rebuffs hooligans, is not afraid to argue with a law-breaking official and achieves hislegal methods, despite the obstacles, he did a great job! However, attempts to hurt an objectionable person, insult her or humiliate her turn impudence into banal rudeness.
