Nikolai Afanasyevich Bulgakov was born in Kyiv on August 20 (01.09), 1898. He graduated from the Alexander Gymnasium, and then entered the Alekseevsky Engineering School in Kyiv, where he acquired the rank of cadet.

Nikolai Bulgakov was a participant in the October battles. After he fought on the Crimean peninsula, where he was seriously wounded in the right lung. 1920 Gallipoli was evacuated. The following year he was awarded the rank of ensign. In the same 1921, he left Turkey for Croatia, where he again enrolled to study at the University of Zagreb.

After 8 years, Bulgakov defended his doctoral dissertation at the same department where he studied. A French professor became interested in his scientific works in the field of bacteriology, and soon Nikolai collaborated with him. On his instructions, the young scientist left for Mexico for three months, where he lectured. During the war of 1941, he was arrested by the German invaders and forced to work as a doctor under their control. Passed away June 13, 1966 at the age of 67.

How Pedel Maxim saved Nikolka

Nikolai Bulgakov in 1918 entered the medical faculty of Kyiv University. Times were already turbulent then. He was a student for about two months.

By mid-November of the same year, martial law had already been declared in Kyiv. For this reason, all educational institutions of the highest rank were closed in the city. Students of Kyiv University zealously supported the volunteer squad of the National Guard of Kyiv, then it was commanded by Lev Nilovich Kirpichev with the rank of major general. The squad was created under the auspices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, headed by Kistiakovsky. Nikolai Bulgakov turned out to be a volunteer of this squad.

In 1918, detachments of volunteers from the front line went to Kyiv, they were pursued by the troops of Ukrainian units. A little later, the volunteers were taken prisoner in the building of the Pedagogical Museum. Young Kolya realized that this was a trap. He jumped through the window of the second floor into the yard, where he met Maxim. The guys exchanged cadet uniforms for civilian ones. Nikolai in civilian clothes freely left the gymnasium and headed home. The rest of the guys were shot.
