There comes a time in every man's life when he wants to know what valor is and whether he is capable of it. Usually life tests a person for character traits, and spontaneously (without a suitable situation) it is very difficult to discover any virtues in oneself. In our article we will try to determine the differences in the concepts of honor, valor and courage (courage).
Variations on the definition of a courageous act
Usually, when a person performs some kind of selfless deed that reveals the nobility of his soul, he is called "brave" or "brave". If a person does the same in wartime on the battlefield, then he is called "valiant." It is difficult to say why, but historically, traditionally, when we talk about military exploits, we mean "valor", and when we talk about civilians - "bravery". You don't want to ask: "Valor - what is it?", right?
Fear
There is a common misconception that valor and courage are the absence of fear. Disappointed: this is not true at all. There is only one person in the world who is not capable of being frightened - one woman, now she is about thirty years old. Scientists study her closely and wonder how she could live so long.
Fear is necessary for a person, it is part of his self-preservation system. The key is that a brave, courageous, valiant person is able to overcome his fear, unlike those who do not possess this inner quality. We hope that now there are no questions left about valor - what it is, and how this quality correlates with fear.
Valour, courage and honor
Now it's time to separate the concepts of courage, bravery, valor and honor. As we have already found out, the first three concepts are united by two main characteristics.
- These are different names for the quality of a person's character, which reveals his ability to act courageously and sacrifice for others.
- Intended to overcome fear.
"Honor" is an external concept in relation to a person and has a kind of compulsory social character. There are certain groups of people who give honor (i.e. how a person looks in the eyes of others) a justifiably high value (the army or the criminal world, i.e. any organization dominated by hierarchy and structure), because in such an environment it is not a whim, but a matter of life and death.
And the defense of honor does not always involveovercoming fear. Since the concept of honor is abstract and rather social than personal, fear may well coexist with the desire to defend one's honor in the eyes of the public.
Thus, honor and valor are the outer and inner side of one phenomenon - courage. A valiant person can be quiet and modest in peaceful life and courageous in crisis situations, and a person of honor is rather a social literacy and a way of recognizing a person as valorous in the eyes of the majority. The title "man of honor" can be both an object of veneration for other people, and an occasion for a variety of manipulations of a dubious nature, so one must be very careful in determining what valor is and what honor is. Maybe sometimes it's better to step back?
Braveheart is a 1995 Mel Gibson film
Everyone knows Mel Gibson's masterpiece. It tells about the fate of the "ordinary peasant" William Wallace, who went to war against England because the English lord killed his wife. We are now of little interest in the plot, the main question in the context of our article is why Mel Gibson called his film "Braveheart" (Braveheart), and not "valiant." Probably because William Wallace in the interpretation of Mel Gibson (W. Wallace as a historical person we leave aside) was not originally a soldier, but showed civic courage. Or maybe it's just a matter of euphony.
