The problem of the development of the northern regions of Russia is becoming more and more urgent today. The focus is not only on the economic sphere, but also on the conditions for the socio-cultural development of indigenous peoples. One of the largest centers for training professional pedagogical and scientific personnel for these regions for many years has been the Institute of the Peoples of the North in St. Petersburg.
From the history of the institute
The starting point for this educational institution was the creation in 1925 of the Northern Institute as a division of the State University of Leningrad. His students were to be representatives of the eastern and northern nationalities of the USSR, as well as the Mongols and Tibetans. A few years later, he began to work autonomously.
In 1929, on the basis of the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute, a training department for the national schools of the North was opened.
In the middle of the last century, after long ups and downs and reorganizations, the pedagogical and Northerninstitutions. The newly formed Faculty of the Peoples of the North occupied the famous building on Stachek Avenue.
Since 2001, it has acquired the status of an institute and its current name.
Basic data
The Institute today is an educational and scientific center for training specialists in the field of ethnic philology, pedagogy, cultural studies for Siberia, the Far North and the Far East. The contribution of the university to the development of Northern studies and training of personnel for the respective regions is noted in the Concept for the Development of the Indigenous Peoples of the North, adopted by order of the Russian government.
Students from 23 northern regions of the Russian Federation (the Republic of Komi, Yakutia, Altai, Tyva, Buryatia, YaNAO, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug and others) study at the Institute of the Peoples of the North of the Herzen Pedagogical University. Among the teachers and students of the institute are Evenks, Mansi, Nanais, Nivkhs, Dolgans, Veps, Sami, Soyots, Tuvans, Udeges, Khanty, Chukchi, Eskimos, Selkups and representatives of a number of other ethnic groups.
The building of the Institute is located in St. Petersburg, Stachek Avenue, 30.
Education Levels
In accordance with the legislation in the field of higher education, the institute trains specialists in undergraduate, graduate, specialist and postgraduate programs.
At present, at the Institute of the Peoples of the North of the Russian State Pedagogical University. Herzen presents 2 main programs at the undergraduate level (duration of study - 4 years) in the direction of "Pedagogical education":
- Culturology (historical education and ethnoculturology).
- Mother tongue and literature (Philology in Nordic education).
As well as the program "Psycholinguistics and mother tongue" in the direction of "Philological education".
The program "Ethnophilology and Ethnoculturology in Northern Education" is being implemented at the master's level (2 years of study, full-time).
In addition, the Institute of the Peoples of the North continues to enroll in specialist programs:
- Culturology (with simultaneous preparation in the speci alty "History").
- Native language and literature (+ additional training in the speci alties "Foreign Language" and "Russian Language and Literature").
- Culturology (in absentia).
Structure of the institute
Today, the institute has several key departments that correspond to the main profiles of training students. Chairs:
- paleoasian languages, folklore and literature;
- Uralic languages;
- ethnoculturology;
- Altaic languages, literature and folklore.
Also on the basis of the Institute of the Peoples of the North operate:
- cabinet of art crafts, decorative and applied arts of the peoples of the North and the Far East;
- Museum of the History of the Institute;
- "Northern Lights" (folklore theater-studio).
This structure allows for comprehensive and multidisciplinary training of students inlinguistic and cultural spheres. Thanks to the staff of the departments, more than 20 languages of the indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East are taught. Moreover, the study of Enets, Ulta, Dolgan, Itelmen languages is organized only in this university.
Target set
According to the rules for admission to the Institute of the Peoples of the North of the Russian State Pedagogical University, admission of applicants is carried out both on a general basis, based on the results of passing the exam, and during the target recruitment.
Every year, about 15 budget places are provided for each of the undergraduate programs. Contractual training is also available. For admission, you may need the results of the Unified State Examination in mathematics, the Russian language, history, and social science. Average passing score (according to the results of the last year) - 229.
To organize the target recruitment, constant work is carried out with the educational authorities of the northern regions, which form applications for the recruitment of applicants for target places. Graduates of the institute who have undergone such training work in their speci alty within the framework of regional employment programs. They become specialists in institutions of education, culture, science, and the social sphere.
In this direction, the institute cooperates with potential employers in the field, scientific organizations, network associations of universities.
Educational, scientific activities and international cooperation
The educational process at the Institute of the Peoples of the North is carried out by the faculty (12professors, more than 20 associate professors, senior lecturers and departmental assistants). Twenty-five of them are representatives of indigenous northern peoples. Simultaneously with the teaching load, teachers are actively engaged in scientific activities, developing teaching aids, dictionaries, textbooks.
The institute also trains highly qualified scientific personnel in three areas: theory and methodology of education and training; history and theory of culture; languages of the peoples of Russia.
Teachers, students and graduate students of the Institute annually participate in all-Russian and international conferences and forums on the problems of northern studies.
Cooperation with regional and foreign partners is actively developing. There are bilateral academic mobility and exchange programs with educational institutions in Finland, Korea, Norway.
