Every person can distribute characteristics to others. Most have enough tact not to voice conclusions or do it alone with loved ones, others do not hesitate to express their opinion on any occasion. So, some contemporaries from older people and learn the original concept of "sloppy". This is a colorful, sonorous term, but with a negative meaning. It is rarely seen even in books. But what does the word mean, how was it formed and developed within the framework of the Russian language?
Unconventional gentleman
Part of Soviet films put an odious phrase with a researched definition into the mouths of ordinary village women, merchants. When it was necessary to indicate the inactivity, passivity of the protagonist, through the mouths of minor characters they declared: “This is scatterbrained! What can we expect from him?”
The reduced colloquial vocabulary was understandable to the layman, immediately fixing attention on oddities, various quirks or unusual behavior. The main manifestations of which were usually:

- lack of vivid experiences;
- thought block;
- slowness of actions.
The term itself can easily jump between parts of speech. As a noun, it refers directly to a person, and as an adjective, it describes the properties inherent in eccentrics.
Mysterious origins
How did the word "sloppy" come about, where does its meaning come from? Philologists are torn between the two theories, and the reason was the periodic spelling through "o" in the second syllable. One version connects with Hebrew maloch:
- angel;
- good man.
Thoughtful slowness, a detached smile seems to be a sufficient argument in favor of this option. But what to do with the negative connotation, which can be traced too clearly? Another version relies on a distortion of the concept of melancholia. When borrowing, as well as the attempt of the peasants to reproduce the master's words in their own way, some sounds could be lost, changed. Melancholy itself is expressed simply:
- oppressed state of mind;
- dreary mood.
In many cases, a sloppy person fits this description perfectly. After all, outsiders will not analyze in detail the nuances of behavior, look for “inexplicable” actions as an excuse in the form of sadness and inattention.
Appropriate usage
No matter how strange the interlocutor may seem, in no case do not use this definition. Even in relation to a very close person. Yes, not considered abusive, acceptable in communicationat the household level, but at the same time critically points out shortcomings.
