How to pronounce: cooking or cookingAria? What letter should be emphasized so as not to be considered ignorant?
About the 2009 language reform
In 2009, on the initiative of the Minister of Education A. A. Fursenko, a reform of the Russian language took place, which entailed not only numerous discussions on the topic of the correct or incorrect pronunciation of certain words, but also cynical jokes about “yogiUrts” and “callers”, but also significant changes in the codification of the Russian language. The boundaries of what was accepted as the norm have expanded, and with them the understanding of what is acceptable and what is not. In their illiteracy, people began to refer to the new rules of the Russian language. However, the reform did not affect all language cases. Some words remained untouched, so it is no longer possible to argue such orthoepic errors with Fursenko's rules. And in the word "cooking" the stress has a whole history.
Correct stress in the word "cooking"
It would seem that there could be some disputes on this subject, if the correct pronunciation can be checked in a simple and logical way by choosing a test word. In this case, this is a pair of "cooking - culinary."
Based on this, the correctwill emphasize the penultimate syllable - kulinAria, since in the word "culinary" the stress also falls on the letter A. Perhaps this was the case until the pronunciation of the word with the stress on the last syllable became common. More and more people, by analogy with other words ending in FL (“pediatrics”, “psychiatry”, “therapy” and others), began to use this word, focusing on the vowel AND. In this form, "cooking" came into use, or, in professional terms, into the usage, thanks to which it was fixed as the second acceptable pronunciation of the word.
"Cooking" in dictionaries
Today, the word “cookingAria”, which was previously considered normalized and the only true one, is rather recognized as obsolete. Although dictionary entries in books and textbooks with orthoepic norms offer both pronunciation options, some still have an additional mark. (“permissible”), where in the word “cooking” the emphasis falls on the letter I.
It is worth remembering that the language does not change by itself, but under the influence of how people use it. Once every hundred years, revolutionary changes occur in the language, in which incorrect forms or even gross errors can become the norm. Therefore, the more competent each speaker speaks it, the fewer changes the language expects in the future.
